What has been your experience with antidepressants?
What would you recommend as a natural antidepressant?

My personal opinion is that for moderate to severe depression, no natural remedy is as effective as prescription meds but for mild depression, natural remedies can be very helpful.

I don't care for St. John's Wort. I think the potential for interaction is too great and the scientific evidence too sketchy. I DO like Sam-e. I find it very helpful during periods of chronic fatigue.

I would recommend that anyone who is dealing with mild depression to investigate a whole-life approach and not rely on JUST a supplement or JUST a breathing technique because I believe that depression is never solely an emotional issue or solely a brain chemistry issue. So it doesn't even begin to make sense that you'd treat it with just an herb or just an exercise regimen.

I agree with the previous poster completely...

I would like to add 5-htp to the list of "natural" alternatives....I was on paxil for awhile and found the 5-htp to be almost identical in the way it made me feel...please note that results from alternatives require even more time to kick in than pharmacueticals and this is true in all applications not just in regard to depression.

For any health condition, it is important for that individual to consider a whole-life approach. Many times an individual with a health condition will start feeling better and they stop their meds and/or go back to an unhealthy life-style. Example-poor diet, not exercising, not getting adequate sleep. Which can compromises the immune system, which than can aggravate a health condition (depression).

If a person is taking a prescription drug, herbs, supplement or incorporating an alternative therapy (reflexology, acupunctures, massage, yoga) it is very important that they continue a healthy life style if they want to feel the benefit from conventional medicine or an alternative therapy.

You cant just take a supplement, and eat a poor diet and expect it to work. And when a person is taking a prescription drug- the doctor usually tells that patient that they need to eat a healthy diet, drink more water, ect or the meds wont work. It is the same with supplements, herbs, and homeopathic medicine; you cant just take one thing and feel it is a cure all. A person has to incorporate a number of life-style changes to feel the benefits. That is why it is so important to be an active participant in your health care, research all information about the meds, herbs, supplement you are taking.

In my article, the suggestions were not meant to advice a person to solely, take a supplement, or just an herb, and their symptoms would go away. Im sure the readers understand that.

Lisa and Roni are examples that natural therapy can work or at least help.
