When I moved to this house it became apparent quite quickly that I was sharing it with some of the old residents. It is a Victorian property & I feel that those who were stuck here were part of a sad story early last century.

Fortunately I was able to persuade several to go to the Light myself, another two left after a chat with a medium friend of mine & a very reluctant & unpleasant character was evicted through group work & angelic intervention. The house now feels physically warmer (the background temperature changed the instant the unpleasant chap left) much less crowded and much more welcoming!

Fortunately most houses aren't quite so active, however if you feel that there is a presence in your home you may like to read my latest article

Have any of you had 'lively' houses like mine?

Lauren, Congratulations on your rather unique take on a "housewarming"!
Most everywhere we've lived we've sensed company there, but nothing like the old Victorian home we rented for 5 years back in the early 90s. We saw different people with a great deal of regularity, and once we were over the startle effect, we got to rather enjoy seeing them. One was a young boy in a sailor suit romper, an older woman, and one I believe was the doctor who owned the house and ran his practice out of. He was often seen wearing a brown bowler hat, a tweedy sort of suitjacket with pleats and a belt sort of WW1 era fashion that emulated the military style of dress. Once I had a good friend over who had not seen anyone at our place but who is rather sensitive and she had an encounter she will never forget. We were painting the bathroom which had at one time been a small bedroom and so had a great tall long window. The curtains were down and, as we lived in the country and well off the road, we didn't fuss about putting the curtain back up for decency sake until we were finished painting. My friend went to the loo and looked out the window as she was using the toilet. She saw a young man walking up from the barn, concentrating on rolling down his shirtsleeves. He looked up, saw her see him (both were startled!) and then he dematerialized from ground on up. Rose couldn't get her trousers up fast enough for her liking - just wanted to get out of the room fast! She said seeing a ghost is one thing... to see it when your pants are down gives one a particularly vulnerable feeling!
Largely because our folks were not nasty in any way, we never asked these ghosts to leave. We asked them to allow us to enjoy the house with them and I think they were rather pleased we were aware of them.
I've other stories about helping friends move their houseguests on out, but I'll save that for another chat.

Oh Trishh that story gave me such a laugh...wonder what the spirit thought

I'm not obsessive about getting spirits out of the house either. I co-existed with some in previous houses, but when they make the space freezing cold & there is a sad/angry atmosphere something needs to happen.

My first quarter gas bill was double what you'd expect for a house this size- especially as there is a brand new boiler, and it still wasn't warm - even the man from the gas company couldn't believe it (I didn't tell him about the spooks)

Looking forward to more stories when you have the time.

I've been "lucky" enough to have several "ghostbuster" invitations and have been surprised and educated each time.
In one home, a thoroughly modern townhouse used by the Canadian military to house their officers while at officer school, the children of the officer in residence were being bothered by lights at night in their rooms, and the whole family was aware of doors and drawers being slammed etc. A Czech friend and I were invited to come over one afternoon and were left alone to see what we could pick up. We wandered from room to room for a bit then settled on a room at the top of the house where some activity had taken place according to family accounts. We each lay on the floor with our eyes closed and spoke aloud to the house spirits hoping for something, but mostly expecting nothing as we had not done anything of this calibre previously. We were prepared as well as could be, grounded, psychically cloaked etc. but we didn't know what to expect. Gradually, we both became aware that we were seeing a figure, then a series of figures. We were able to describe them to each other and were stunned to find that we were "seeing" the same thing. We suggested that these spririts "go to the light" or move along or something, but this suggestion was met with a bit of derision and disdain. These spirits felt that, for one spirit the officer, and for the other the wife, they were their special charges. These spirits clearly felt they were the appointed guardians of these folks. The first spirit had himself been a soldier (Prussian I believe by the uniform) and was there to protect a fellow officer. The other spirit, a woman of Civil War era was clad entirely in black veil or widow's weeds from head to toe (the grief that rolled off her when we asked whom she had lost/was grieving was huge. Husband, brother, son, father...) was there to care for a soldier's wife. Neither spirit seemed to have been aware of the other's presence but now were and were glad. In fact, the spirits disclosed that they had followed this family from move to move. The family confirmed later that the activity wasn't specific to this house, but would start up several months after the family moved, which they did frequently.
Needless to say this encounter left us feeling suitably admonished, but we did end up getting the spirits' promise to back off a bit as the children were getting a little freaked. When we told this family what we had seen and heard, it made quite a bit of sense to them and was ultimately a comfort. I had always thought previously that spirits we saw most often were stuck. It pleases me to think some have taken caring for fellow humans as their post life avocation!
I'd like to hear others' stories about spirit encounters. Let's gather round the campfire... who's got the marshmallows? Trishh

Thanks Trishh, that was a fascinating encounter. It's a good reminder too that even kindly spirits can be unnerving without meaning to be, and that we don't always know best!

I had a strange experience here a couple of months ago. Some of my students come from South Wales, where coal-mining communities were centred until relatively recently. The other weekend when they came for their lesson I believe they managed to bring along a 'hitcher'. As I said goodbye to them on the Saturday evening I noticed a draught sweep past me on the stairs, but didn't pay too much attention. Then that evening I went to the bathroom- looking in the mirror my face changed to resemble a man, looking rather grey & out of focus. Slightly unnerving, but not as scary as you'd think.

On the Sunday morning I was teaching about meridians when a draught swept between me & a student; we both noticed it. At that point one of the students, a medium, said a large man was standing in the corner of the room (I rarely see spirit, I tend to sense in other ways.) We couldn't carry on with the lesson as it was a little distracting, so I asked him to leave, however he didn't want to go. We decided to call tea break & he followed into the kitchen.

One of the students picked up that he wanted to speak & in the end the two natural mediums in the group allowed him to tell his story- working simultaneously- it was something to behold! It was a sad tale, he had taken his teenage son down the pit against the wishes of his wife. On their first journey down the cable holding the cage they were travelling in broke & they plummeted to their deaths. He hadn't been able to move on because of the guilt he felt about his son. As soon as his story was told he was happy to be moved to the light & left. We assume he came along to ensure he could get heard- fascinating, but I have warned my lot not to make a habit of it- it does disrupt the teaching!

I'll make some hot chocolate if anyone would like to join us in ghost tales round the fire.
