Anyone read the just released "Lost Gospel of <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />Judas"? I've ordered it from National Geographic, but its on back order.

From USA Today: The lost Gospel of Judas consists of "13 papyrus sheets bound in leather and found in a cave in Egypt purports to relate the last days of Jesus' life, from the viewpoint of Judas, one of Jesus' first followers. Christians teach that Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, but in this gospel, he is the hero, Jesus' most senior and trusted disciple and the only one who knows Jesus' true identity as the son of God."

I got a theory about this newly discovered text...

You know how you have really hardened criminals, not a good bone in their bodies, who perpetrate the most heinous crimes...But somehow, their mothers still think the sun shines out from their deepest darkest depths....?

I can only hypothesise, but I figure something like that happened here....

"No, really, he is such a good boy, he phones me every week...brings me flowers and chocolates....he's just very misunderstood....He and JC were 'like that' (cross fingers together), you know, really, he was JC's closest friend and confidant...."

His mamma probably wrote to a relative, and the relative told someone else, and that got passed on... and so, the chinese whispers grew.....

Bit tongue-in-cheek, but then again, who knows....?

Found an article on it here you might be interested to have a gander at....!

Lack of historical accuracy. One of those books that was tossed aside along with Enoch, Jasher, Jubilees and the other apocrypha, hmm? Editors...

I'll wait to comment further until when/if the book comes in.

Many books from the time of Jesus and also the Old Testament times, that are not accepted as Bible scripture, are many times completely accurate history wise and factual wise, just are not considered "inspired" by the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel of Judas, may "possibly" have accuracies but I am wanting to see at what point the story reaches and ends because very faithful and sincere followers of God and Christ, have historicly become "apostates".
Peter publicly rejected Christ three times publicly but previously had offered to die with him. Peter repented but it didn't appear from the scriptures that Judas did.
I suppose what I'm saing, is that it all depends upon at what point the story is being related.
Jesus "chose" Judas as a desciple and I believe Judas had free choice, at that point and afterward, just as we all do.
The Bible does plainly state that Satan entered into Judas.
Just some thoughts I wanted to add.

It is interesting to note that usually the person that betrays you is the person who is closest to you.

I forget where I heard this but perhaps Judas was only doing what he felt was the right thing to do by turning Christ over to the authorities. Maybe it was a test to see if Jesus was truly the Messiah and be able to "rise above it" so to speak and come out victorious. I think Judas realized when Jesus was being beaten that he had made a terrible mistake of judgement and he realized the part he had played in God's ultimate plan of redemtion for the world, and he couldn't handle it. He felt bad that God had chosen him to be the one to turn Jesus, whom he loved into the hands of those who wished to kill him. And I think he misunderstood the victory God had in mind thorugh the resurrection of Christ. After all, Judas was dead before the third day. I wonder what Jesus would have done or said to him had he not killed himself...

Anyway, we'll have to wait untill it's released to see what it really says.

I have read the other Gnostic gospels and have a few secret theories of my own...

There is a story I have heard of elsewhere - and I know not whence it comes - that the day after Christ's crucifiction, mary went to meet with Judas' Mother, because they had both lost their sons.....

Just to let you know. This is one of the Gnostic Bibles found in a cave in Eygpt. There are only a few, I think 5, copies of each manuscript and non are complete, out of all the copies you cannot make one complete manuscript.

The other thing. The title maybe the book of Judas of Iscarot but he didn't write it. In fact the Gnostics were written over 200 years after the death of Jesus. Remember Judas committed suicide because of the guilt he felt.

In order for the books of the Bible to be accepted they had to pass all the certain tests:

Be written by an aposile or a very close contemporary of
Had to be written by someone who had standing in the early church
Had to be written before 100 AD
Had to be a full manuscript and the whole had to reflect what was believed in the early church
If any part was not accepted by the early church the whole book was set aside and did not make it into the book.
There had to be more than a few copies and the copies had to match up.
