A reader emailed:

"What type of closures for doll clothes would you recommend besides the thick store-bought Velcro-type?"

I've written a tutorial on getting some of the bulkiness out of the full width of Velcro by splitting it lengthwise:

What we're trying to do is avoid having kids swallow buttons or hooks and eyes.

Another safe way to make closures is to sew a length of ribbon to each side of the back opening and tie a bow.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? <img src="/images/graemlins/queen.gif" alt="" />

Snaps? Though these probably fall into the button category. Still, they're harder to get off than buttons.

Lynn, thanks for your suggestion. Yes, some snaps are harder to get off, but snaps that are punched into material are unsafe, too, because they can be torn out of dress material.

While I'm on this topic, please do not use buttons for eyes on dolls or teddies.

Another thoughts - rather than using strips of Velcro, the smaller dots are thinner. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
