The Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony was held tonight in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria.

I was quite impressed by the innovative aspect of using the Yarra River as part of the opening ceremony, rather than the stadium only. The fireworks from the city buildings during the ceremony was also spectacular.

Has anyone been to Melbourne? It's one of Australia's most vibrant cities, in my humble opinion.

It's been amazing. I live in Melbourne, and by co-incidence our holiday in NSW has fallen over the Commonwealth games. I have been so jealous that I couldn't be home for most of this, but we made up for that on Saturday when we got back. We went in to the city and walked along the Yarra - the whole of the Federation square and Birrarung Marr area has been used for festivities, activities, events - it's a carnaval atmosphere and such fun. We went to the athletics finals at the MCG together with 83000 other people and it was wonderful.

I adore Melbourne and totally agree with you Yvonne, it is a vibrant and interesting place to live and visit. (How's that for a plug for my city!
