There is much lore surrounding flowers. Daisies bring luck and protection, roses bring romance, carnations bring good health and honeysuckle attracts wealth. What flowers do you find you surround yourself with most of the time?

I like all flowers, but find I enjoy wearing Jasmine oil! YUM! I love when I smell delicious!

Hmmm, this is not a question with a simple answer (for me!) We have a year round growing season here, so in cool weather, every year I have snapdragons (talking flowers), pansies, (dry beautifully), paperwhites, daffodils, violets (all my life, and now these bloom starting in November! It used to be just March thru April!), beautiful blue delphinium (save the dried flowers for potpourri, they keep their blue color for years). Warm weather brings zinnias, wildflowers (plant a package, they have cool flowers, plus come back for several years), tall sunflowers, dark purplish-blue agapanthus, birdseed (plant some, you will be pleasantly surprised at some of the blooms on the plants), daisies. I have miniature roses that bloom all year, and there is always a sunflower in my yard, either the birdseed kind, the beach sunflower, or the tall ones. When I go to the florist, I get roses for special occasions, and for me I always get the blue delphinium. I love planting flower seeds. I have honeysuckle and wisteria. I believe in flower power <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Firefly, what a wonderful garden you have! We are in the process of remodeling our house, and as soon as we are finished - MANY flowers shall be planted! I really want some snapdragons, honeysuckle, plumeria, freesia and sunflowers!

i was a florist for over 10 years...so i jadedly developed an immunity to the ooo ahh stage of flower recieving...personally tho if i purchase flowers theyre sunflowers, they are my trade mark to give to anyone for anything, get well, babies, just because etc (unless of course I know they have a favorite).
its kinda funny too because just last winter i found my family scottish crest and other info, turns out it involves sunflowers ... i remember getting a chill when i learned that bit of info.

What I pllant here at the house are gladiolous, daffs tulips herbs like thyme and tons and tons of sage as well as mint. I hope to plant tobacco this year (they have cute little white and / or yellow flowers as well as the leaves being useful on the pow wow circuit)
I also love purplle statice and orange roses...haha and by those colors you can tell im not a classic girl or a shrinking "violet" <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

That's an unusual device on a crest- sounds like you have sunflowers running through your veins Wendy <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I've got a blank canvas at my new house too. Just a bare plot with a few overgrown shrubs. I love fragrant herbs- lavender, rosemary & mint especially. I'm looking forwards to Spring now & getting out there.

Oh my, seeing the title of this post jarred my memory. There's a folk story I heard as a child - a guy was going to pick a beautiful flower for his fiance, and the flower begged not to be picked. And? I need some more memory jarring for the rest of that story to surface.

Don't know that one, but there is a beautiful celtic tale about a flower bride, Bloduewedd. Alan Garner retells it with a modern twist in a very sophisticated children's book 'The Owl Service'.

theres one about an old man aka a wizard or wise man whathave you...he sits by a well and a girl comes up with her pail to fetch water and he asks her to spare some for him. she snidely tells him to fetch his own water and he casts a spell on her that henceforth when ever she speaks sankes and serpents fall from her lips.
a second maiden comes up and he asks her the same question, if shed be kind enough to fetch him some water too. She gets him some water from the coolest part of the well and he thanks her by waving his hand over her so that fromm that day forward whenever she spoke flowers and jewels fell from her lips.

Dont ask me where i got that little fable from...obviously it goes along the linnes of be nice to/respect your elders...

There was a similar story in some children's fairy tale book I used to have (probably still somewhere in my parents home). The two maidens were step sisters - one was wicked and other was nice. And each got what she deserved.
