If I spot a day or two before my period do I need to include those in my cycle? Is the start of my period actually when I start spotting or flowing?

The first day of your period is the first day of FULL flow. THat would be called cycle day 1

Agree. Day #1 is when you see the bright red for the first time. I have lots of spotting (I may be perimenopausal though, at only 38) for a few days before my period.

Spotting a few days before period is normal. Many women get that. I agree that period starts with a full flow.
