This is a horse that I didn't own myself, but had the privilege of working with and we shared a strong bond. I really miss RedMan a lot.

I'll post more photos of my other horses later. I've got to dig them out and scan them! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Here is a photo of my Nugget. He was enjoying the spring sunshine. Nugget is part appaloosa and we believe some Halfinger. He was a rescue horse. When he went into rescue he was so starved that they almost put him down. But with some good food and proper vetting, he came through with flying colors. That was 4 years ago and now he's such a butterball it's hard to believe he was ever so skinny and sickly.

What a pretty boy! Same with the TB. I'm a big advocate of adopting. I love to see the success stories.

I see you've got him barefoot. I'm preparing a barefoot article. Can you tell me your experience with that?

Nugget doesn't need shoes. He's got an incredible hoof. (That is part of the reason our farrier suspects the draft blood in him.) He can go down the road, through the woods and into the river without any trouble. His hooves never split or crack and will only start to chip when the need trimming.

The TB, on the other hand, needs shoes. He has a very small hoof (even though he is much larger than Nugget) and has a tendency to crack. He is also very soft soled. I think this is a result of two things, one being the breed and one being the way he was raised. Racing TBs have shoes on all fours all the time. He never had to toughen up his feet. My son usually just puts shoes on the front now and he does real well.

We also live in an area that gets a lot of ice and snow. We pull the shoes by mid-November and usually don't have them on again until April or May. They don't need them in the winter and they can become like skates on the ice.

I agree with you that it's the breed that gives them a soft or hard hoof, plus the constant shoeing transforms the foot from round into a U-shape and prevents it from growing as it should naturally. My TB has such thin soles and needs corrective shoeing all the time, I could never go barefoot with him. In future, when I adopt another horse (not a TB), I shall try barefooting.

Cute pic =P
