Let's face it, sometimes our own family members and friends are those who display the most appalling etiquette, and it's enough to make you want to skip holiday dinners altogether.

What show of etiquette from family and friends are you most hoping to avoid? Feel free to tell us why.

My stepson is one of those people who loves to shock others. He has been in jail many times and when he is out tends to always be in some sort of bad situation. Over the years we have tried to help him in any way that he can, but he just doesn't want to work and expects us to let him come and go as he pleases and do whatever he wants. He had finally gotten a job and moved out and was doing well. That didn't last long. But anyway, he always has these girlfriends that have horrible manners, potty mouths and wear very revealing clothing. So, I always dread any family get togethers because we don't know what to expect! Thanksgiving went well (we laid down the law several times...we don't want to see her belly, breasts or butt hanging out of any clothes and also no cussing or inappropriate conversation or you will both be asked to leave). She showed up in a turtleneck. I was very relieved!

Good for you Connie - and your family!

Mine is kind of a personal thing, and isn't going to affect a whole lot of people:

But I'm one of those that is constantly trying to "diet" - and it seems like the harder it is I'm trying to lose weight, the more the people around me (especially my family - David's family is absolutely wonderful!) try to push food down my throat.

"Is that all you're going to eat?"
"Aren't you going to try a piece of my triple chocolate fat/cholesterol/calorie/gain 10 lbs a slice cake?"
"But I made this especially for you!"

AAAAAUUUUUGGGHHHHH!!!!!
After I have my gastric bypass, they'll either accept "no" for an answer, or they can have me explain to them the wonders of "Dumping Syndrome"!

Good luck with your diet. I always like what Garfield said about dieting, "Diet is Die with a t". Do you have to lose a certain amount of weight before you can have the gastic bypass?

The girlfriend is coming for Christmas dinner again. Hopefully she will wear that turtleneck again!

I have a couple. First off, I don't wanna hear "when are you two gonna get married?" or "when are you two gonna have a baby?". The answer to both those questions is "when we get around to it!" but people don't quite seem to "get" it. We already wear rings, we're just too lazy and busy to plan a wedding. Kids? We'll let you know when it happens, we promise!

I'm also not a big fan of inappropriate gift-giving. For some reason, the hip generic gift lately seems to be scented candles. I'm allergic to them, one year I had an allergy attack while opening one. Gee, thanks. Whatever happened to nice journals or sets of pretty stationery?

To Connie: No I don't have to lose a certain amount of weight. (Some Dr.s do require that, but mine doesn't). But, they do want me to get used to drinking lots of water throughout the day, and starting replacing 1 meal w/ a protein shake so I'll be used to the flavor and consistency by the time they are my main source of nutrition for the first month. So I have lost about 15 lbs since the hysterectomy in September, all-in-all. (Of course, that surgery didn't hurt things either!)

To Megan: It seems to me that if someone is going to give you a gift they would know you well enough to know your allergies! Or at least take the time to find out what you like and dislike. What good does it do to buy a gift for someone if they are going to throw it away? Gifts are supposed to be about the other person, not the giver. but too many times it seems like the giver just wants to show off!

Good luck with your surgery Michelle!

Megan, that reminds me of when I used to smoke and my mom would always ask me "when are you quitting". I would tell her the day I quit breathing is the day I will quit. She would have my kids tell me they didn't want mommy to die. My dr would ask me the same thing every visit. Finally I guess I was ready to quit. Now mom bugs me about my "elephants". I have 2 great danes and she insists my life would be better without them.
