Where would the popular modern horror movie be without its trademark theme? Think "Halloween," "Nightmare on Elm Street," and "Amityville Horror" to name a few; you get the idea. Does a soundtrack make the horror movie? Would a movie scare be less effective without the orchestated musical "pop" at the moment of demise? What are some of your favorite horror soundtracks, and why? What should I have for supper tonight? Hmmmm.
Feel free to rant.

I couldn't agree more. A horror film needs a purpose written soundtrack. It does not need bland music with screaming guitars at the scary bits (hang your head in shame Freddy Vs Jason)! Halloween is a great example, written by the director no less, as is Re-animator. For the best, you have to check out anything Italian...Zombie, Tenebrae, Suspiria, Demons...all perfect for the movie itself!
How about the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre then? A collection of hellish noises all mixed up together, making the soundtrack as harrowing as the film.

How about "Alien" soundtrack? Just get your heart thumpin', then half the time leave you hanging. And about the time you think you've got it figured out. Boom! Something actually does happen!
Perfect!

Oh, sorry. forgot this. Sometimes silence is just as good as a soundtrack.
We've all gotten so used to having some kind of music in the background, so when everything goes silent, and all you hear is say the breathing of either the killer, or the person who is scared (think "Blair Witch") it's just unnerving!

You know Andy, he might actually need REAL suggestions for dinner!
Justin, are you a bachelor sweetheart? Do we need to fix you up with something beyond Ramen noodles and Kraft Macaroni & Cheese?

Michelle,
Actually, I recently watched the "brain" sequence in Hannibal. I think I'm good with the whole "not eatin'" thing for a few days. Then it's back to my mac and cheese!
Great points on BLAIR WITCH. Yes, there was certainly an effective silence to the film, which was perfect for what it was going for. Of course, the limited camera perspective helped build the suspense for the audience, as well as the nausea! (I believe the latter was unintentional).
I've always enjoyed the soundtrack to Killer Klowns from Outer Space. =) Actually, one of my favorite soundtracks to a scary movie (yes, and I say scary because it disturbed me greatly) is REQUIEM FOR A DREAM by the Cronos, something or other Quartet, I believe? Anyway, it instills a bout of paranoia in the viewer that is extremely well-designed and complimentary to the film, reflecting the general addictive atmosphere. Good stuff.

You know clowns seem to be a universal scary theme. That and dolls. I have a grown male friend who is still freaked out by clowns at the circus. And I have this "lifesize" doll (from when I was little) that I locked in my closet every night until I was 18.
And, no she does NOT live with me now, she stays at my Mom's house. I would have burned her long ago, except my mother says she belonged to my great-great aunt and she's a treasure. (I still say she's possessed and evil and should be steaked and burned until there's nothing left.)
I freak out if I see my daughter playing with her, because I'm sure she's going to be killed. And I am a 34 yr old, mostly rational woman!

Right, as moderator of this forum I hereby ban any talk of scary clowns/dolls, especially lifesize ones.
Poltergeist was my introduction to horror movies, which did my already over active imagination no favours when it came to those sorts of things! I simply cannot stand them!
Have to get round to seeing Requium Justin, have heard good things from other people too.

My husband had the audacity to say to me last night that he thought that banned from Poltergeist was cute!
I'm sleeping with a gun under my pillow from now on.
