In wining her 3rd Melbourne Cup, Makybe Diva has cemented her place in Australian Horseracing History.

Australia has become overrun with "Diva Madness" as 7 year old mare does what no other horse, including the great Phar Lap, has ever done - winning the Melbourne Cup 3 times.

Trainer, Lee Freidman, announced after the race that Diva was now retired.

Phar Lap and Gunsynd have been joined in the stratosphere by the beautiful Makybe Diva.

What a race! <img src="/images/graemlins/queen.gif" alt="" />

Indeed!

If you enjoy dressing up, joining in with the crowds, horseracing, betting, drinking and festivities - Melbourne in late October and early November is the place for you. The Melbourne cup is the culmination of the spring racing season and occurs on the first Tuesday in November. It's a metropolitan holiday here too.

If you prefer peace and quiet and relaxation and you're not particularly fond of horses, avoid arriving in Melbourne in early November (I recommend Tasmania (seriously - it's a stunning place) at this time of the year if you're avoiding the blistering heat (it's 32 degrees C here today!), or the Gold coast or Perth and Rottnest Island if you're chasing the sun.)

But come see Melbourne from mid-November onwards - the best time of the year.

It's really funny - the Cup is the only thing that really stops Australia in it's tracks!

In fact, the only other sporting event I can recall doing that was when we won the America's Cup.

And the best thing about the Cup, is that no matter where you are over here, there's a party going on on Cup day.

And you're right - November, no matter where you are in Australia, tends to be just about the nicest time of the year. (the heat's creaping in , but the humidity is yet to make it's presence felt).
