People sometimes feel more of an affinity for mythological creatures than more conventional totem animals. Here is a guide to some of the more fantastical creatures with whom you may choose to work.

I've felt very much akin with the phoenix lately.

During the lowest point of my depression, when I was contemplating suicide, and decided to admit myself to an inpatient program; I felt very much as if I were already dead inside. And I was certainly feeling like everything and everyone would be better off if I was.

But after the hospital, and an outpatient treatment program, I started living again. I started doing things. Writing a book about depression (it may not go anywhere, but its almost like journaling), writing my music again, getting the editor position here. It was like I had come out of the flames; maybe not a new person, but definitely with a new attitude.

So I easily identify with the phoenix - it is a creature of so much HOPE. <img src="/images/graemlins/heart.gif" alt="" />

dragons have always been with me - even when I was younger. I even have one on my class ring and the mascot at my high school was the 'green wave'

Today I 'recieved' 2 of them

I got the idea for the article at a pagan gathering, when I thought of all the names that people were using. Many Pagans take a second or new name that they use within the community, and a lot of people incorporate their totems with that. I've known several people named Dragon and now know a few Phoenixes as well.

Wendy - Green Wave? We had a school in my hometown thats mascot was the green wave! (But it wasn't a dragon, just a big green wave)

I think phoenix are fascinating. I love the imagery they bring and the fact that like dragons, they are found cross culturally. One of my favorite tarot cards depicts a woman standing in a cauldron with a phoenix made of flames behind her as if she and the phoenix both were rising from whatever transfromation they had endoured.

lol the green wave is actually a tsunami not a dragon, a dragon is however, what i got put onto my class ring.

Also, my dragons are usually chinese water dragons...perhaps a connection to my totem of dragonfly?

A woman who comes into my store often has a son named Phoenix, he is an awesome little 5 year old. There is also a girl at work whom inwardly I call the Phoenix, she has these amazing darkly-tarnished wing earrings that she wears all the time.

In grade school I loved gryphons, even liked the name Gryphon for a while.

I had a *huge* unicorn phase in junior high school. I had some pictures from an article on a "real" unicorn that some people had raised, he was a bearded goat with a single horn in the center of his forehead and his name was Lancelot.

Just about six or seven years ago a boyfriend took me to a house in Northern CA for a summer solstice gathering. I was talking with an older gentleman about unicorns and told my story of once getting to actually see the living unicorn that had so captivated me. His eyes lit up and I was informed that I was talking with the man who had bred and raised Lancelot: this was my first meeting and introduction to Oberon Zell-Ravenheart! What an utter delight!!! We had many hours of wonderful conversation during the course of my visit....
