Does anyone know if it's ok to color your hair if you're pregnant. I go red, so I guess Henna is an option.

Anything that would give off any sort of chemical fumes should be avoided as these can often cause damage to a fetus, especially very early in pregnancy. (I learned this as a costume/dyeing major in college) And anything that might be absorbed by your skin would also potentially effect the baby. I just recently wrote about possible effects of tattooing or piercing when pregnant, and basically if it can get into your bloodstream, it IS going to go to the baby.

I would think henna would be safe, as it's a stain that stays on the outside of the body. I also have a few friends who didn't color their hair when pregnant as they were enjoying the change in their hair from all the hormones and vitamins in their bodies.

Most doctors now advise against haircolor during pregnancy. I think the few months without color is a very small sacrifice to help assure a healthy baby. I would avoid henna also. Anything that is on your skin will be absorbed to some extent.

You could try a highlighting. The color is placed inside foils and never touches your skin.

If you cannot stop yourself from coloring your hair for a few months then being a parent is not for you. Maybe it does not affect the fetus but what if it does? Is having your hair colored the way you want it more important than the health of your child?
