My hair is naturally mid-brown and I'm really bored with it. I would like to have my hair colour a light shade of brown. I've bought a bottle of "light golden brown" dye that was supposed to last 8 washes but no colour appeared at all. What is the best thing to use apart from peroxide? Also a few years ago I once tried to get light brown hair only it made my hair brittle and ginger (copper) colour!!! I really didn't want that. I've grown much of this hair out so I can use dye again. I just don't want to make mistakes. The strand tests seem to look better than it does on the rest of my hair.

Any hair color that washes out in 8 washes will not lighten your hair. You have to have a developer such as peroxide to do that.

I would use an ash toned tint that is lighter than the shade you want to lighten your hair to light brown. However, it may still go to copper or orange. That's why it is a good idea to go to a hairdresser to have it done. They have experience and can look at your hair to get a better idea of what is needed to get the color you want.

They also have toners that may be needed if it turns too warm (red)

Thanks for the feedback. The hairdressers seem like a better idea although I was hoping that some of these dyes would work as they promise on the dye boxes. The dye that I used recently said that the colour can appear on light to mid-brown hair but it didn't work. I shall visit a hairdresser though.
