Have you seen any of the Elizabeth Zimmerman stuff? She does a lot with circulars. You knit the thing in the round and then baste and cut up the front and add borders. This sounds awful and some people won't do it but I got over my fear of cutting knitting and have done a few of these. Also there are the garter stitch things like the Adult Surprise Jacket which can also be made closer fitting like a cardigan. EZ's daughter Meg runs Schoolhouse Press (
www.schoolhousepress.com) and sells all of EZ's books and patterns.
Another cardigan I can think of off hand is by Medrith Glover. She has a pattern for a cardigan knit on circulars that is pretty cool. You make the pockets right at the start and knit back and forth in stockinette. I made one of these and the design is pretty neat. She gives instructions on how to modify it for larger sizes, too. Just found her info: The Woolroom; PO Box 353; Quincy CA 95971. Her phone is 530/283-0648, and shes open Tues & Thurs 10-6 & Sat 10-4 (PST)
Her cardigan is called the Circumnavigated and on the Ample Knitter's email list they did a knit-along of it a couple years ago.
www.ample-knitters.com and look under resources for more on Medrith Glover. There is also information on lots of other places to find patterns there. (I hope it's OK to mention other web sites here!)
