Has anybody read Eragon, by Christopher Paolini? How did you like it? He has another one coming out soon (if it hasn't already.)

I haven't read it, but the second one is out August 23. I've heard mixed reviews. Generally I've heard bad reviews from life long fantasy fans and good reviews from those that don't read alot in the genre.

Eragon was wonderful. I cannot wait for Eldest, coming out August 23.
Maybe Eragon didn't cut the mustard with fantasy readers, but I'm a prodigious reader of across the board, and I was delighted with it. That it was written by a 19-year-old impressed me most of all. I would have been prepared to make some slight allowance for youth, but it wasn't at all necessary. The book rocked. (My 15-year-old has been waiting impatiently as well. We're going to have a book war when it gets here. I can see it now.)

I read Eragon last month and I did not like it. I almost put it down, but a friend told me that it picks up and it did. However I just could not get into the grove of it.
I'm hard to remember, but I'm impossible to forget.

I tried listening to Eragon on Audiobook (I drive a lot) but could not finish it. The characters seemed insincere (I could not justify their emotional responses), the details were not consistent (how many times did Eragon's shirt get torn up then magically reappear whole again?), and I don't think I've read a worse description of someone finding out about magic.
I have not given up on Christopher Paolini, I think he has potential but has not reached it yet.

Generally I've heard bad reviews from life long fantasy fans and good reviews from those that don't read alot in the genre. I'd have to say that's my experience too. Some friends who read it loved it. They also thought Lord of the Rings had too many characters to keep track of and was too hard to get through. I thought Eragon was good but not great. I felt it was too close to other better books. (ie the magic from Earthsea, names from Tolkien, etc.) I hope Eldest is better!

My best friend loved it - and insisted I borrow it.
I didn't enjoy it at all (which is unusual for me - because anything with a Dragon in it is usually an automatic enjoy!). I felt that he had borrowed too much from too many others of the genre, not only Tolkien and Earthsea, but a fairly large helping of Pern as well.
I know it was a first book, written by a teenager. I think he has great potential - he just needs to learn a bit more and find his own "voice".

Read it, listened to it. Theres room to debate the matter, but this being the authors debut book, my hat goes off to him and his perseverance for seeing this dream through and following it with a sequel.
Others in my family have read this and enjoyed it as well. One was a 17-yr-old and the other 13.
I want to partake of the passions in life--to experience what it means to truly be alive.

I read it and Eldest and I enjoyed both. One could sit and disect any book, but I give this young man credit for his writing. I am waiting for the next one, lol!---Ree

but I give this young man credit for his writing. I agree he's made a major accomplishment in getting published and finding such popularity. Since my last post I have tried twice to read Eragon and couldn't get into it. As a few others said, I felt too many things were similar to other works (Earthsea really struck me!) And I just didn't feel the characters. It felt like work to read it. But is this the worst I've read? No. I'd be curious to see how his writing develops after a few years.

Thought it was brilliant! Two thumbs and two big toes - way way up!
His second, (according to my friend who is currently reading it) is supposed to be amazing!
