Rank, utter newbie here, been tatting for all of a week. I have a little pile of rings and chains here, decided to tackle an actual project, one of Gillian's, the square coaster from her Tatter's Paradise site. So, I'm cruising along fine and having fun, and the shuttle (I have a Susan Bates bobbin shuttle) runs out of thread. I'm doing this with the Continuous Thread method. Now what? How do I wind more thread onto the bobbin? I could probably figure it out on my own, but thought I would consult the experts first.

Yes you'll need to work to the last ring you can manage, cut off the old thread leaving an end about four to six inches long and refill the bobbin. Be sure to leave a nice long end - a couple of yards - on the ball side, then I just tie the new thread onto the base of the ring with a square knot/reef knot. As I work the chain I pull the old and new thread through the stitches to lie parallel to the core thread using a crochet hook, then when I've worked a few more rings and chains I trim the ends close with a pair of sharp 4 inch embroidery scissors.

Eventually you'll learn some more invisible methods of finishing ends but this has always worked well for me.

If you've only one ball of the yarn you're using, try taking out the centre card and finding the other end of the yarn to fill the bobbin. Squash the card to help remove it first. Then replace the card when your bobbin is full. That way you won't need to buy another ball.

Hope this helps,
Jo
