Public destination - I like to go sight seeing and visit interesting places. I cannot imagine a private island offering anything but recreation which doesn't interest me.
I sort of feel the same way, I want to see where real people have built a culture, not an island that is solely a restaurant-and-bar for a cruise line. However I can see, if I had young kids, how a "safe environment" might be attractive.

Public destinations are definitely more cultural but sometimes the secluded tranquility of a private beach is just what you're looking for on a cruise. Enjoying an idyllic setting if only for a few hours is what many people are dreaming of! And Castaway Cay on the Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cay of Princess Cruise Line are gorgeous!
