Celtic land Poland striker Zurawski

GLASGOW, July 8 (Reuters) - Celtic have signed Poland striker Maciej Zurawski for two million pounds ($3.50 million) on a three-year deal from Wisla Krakow.
The 29-year-old finally put pen to paper after protracted negotiations and interest from Turkish side Trabsonspor and Italians Fiorentina.

"I am very happy just to be here in Scotland. I don't know if I ever worried this deal wold not happen," Zurawski told reporters. "All I know is that everything is alright now."

Zurawski will join up with his new team mates at their Bisham Abbey training camp next week.

West Brom eye Polish star Bieniuk

West Brom are giving a five-day trial to Poland defender Jaroslaw Bieniuk.

The 26-year-old Amica Wronki star, who has won seven Polish caps, could be in line for a �350,000 move to The Hawthorns if he impresses.

Amica's vice-president Arkadiusz Kasprzak confirmed: "There has not been a formal offer as such but we believe it may lead to more talks."

And Kasprzak added: "We, as a club, have to discuss what is the right thing for us and the player."

Bieniuk has two years remaining of his current contract, but the 6ft 3in stopper has also admitted he would consider a move to England to further his career.

Amica officials are stressing negotiations are at only an early stage but Robson has admitted he is keen to sign another defender - and a striker - before the new season gets underway.

Robson has already signed utility player Steve Watson from Everton, midfielder Darren Carter from Birmingham and 'keeper Chris Kirkland on loan from Liverpool during the close season.

He is also expecting to find out in the near future whether he can re-sign Kieran Richardson on loan, with the player due to have talks over his future with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Meanwhile, three of Robson's squad will not feature in the club's two weekend friendlies with Cheltenham at Whaddon Road and AFC Telford at Bucks Head.

Midfielders Zoltan Gera and Junichi Inamoto plus striker Kanu have been given extra time off after featuring in recent internationals for Hungary, Japan and Nigeria respectively.

Boruc - a goalkeeper or goalie from Legia Warszawa was to go to Celtic, too.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood is the latest Bank of Scotland Premier League manager to turn his attention towards recruiting players from Poland.

New Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has led the way in that field by snapping up prolific striker Maciej Zurawski from Wisla Krakow for �2million.

Hearts, Hibernian and Dunfermline all currently have players from Poland on trial and Calderwood has revealed he has one arriving on Sunday.

The former Dunfermline boss was keeping the player's identity under wraps but confirmed the trialist is an international striker.

The new man is set to be given chances to impress Tuesday or Thursday in friendlies at Montrose and Fraserburgh and perhaps against Dutch teams as well when the Dons head to Holland to complete their pre-season preparations.

The Dons won 4-2 at Huntley on Saturday in a testimonial for the Highland League side's prolific scorer Martin Stewart.

The veteran netted both of his side's goals to wipe out a first-half lead that had been established by a Scott Anderson own goal and a cool finish from young striker John Stewart.

The Dons came out on top in the end thanks to two late goals from Richie Byrne.

Trialist Henry McStay, the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, completed the 90 minutes in central defence and Calderwood admitted he had been impressed by the former Leeds man, who is 20 and a free agent after leaving Halifax Town.

He said: "I thought he did okay. He was playing against two powerful strikers but he stuck to his task.

"We have been to see him a couple of times last season at Leeds and he will be staying with us until Wednesday."

Overall however, Calderwood expected more from his players in future outings.

He said: "Our passing was sloppy and our final ball let us down badly. The pitch was quite hard and we did a bit better when it started raining and the surface was a bit more slick.

"I was pleased for Richie to get the goals. The lad was not fit when he arrived last season but he has worked hard over the summer and is fit now."

Hearts have handed a trial to Polish international Maciej Murawski.


Murawski is currently playing in Greece for Aris Saloniki.

Sunderland have expressed an interest in Derby County striker Grzegorz Rasiak but are yet to make a firm offer for the Poland international.

After missing out on Portsmouth's Ricardo Fuller and Kenny Miller of Wolves, Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy turned his attention to Rasiak as he attempts to strengthen his strike-force.

Rasiak is keen on a move to the Premiership but as far as his agent Giorgio De Giorgis is concerned, Sunderland's interest is only speculation at this stage.

"Anyone interested in buying him would have to speak directly to Derby County," he revealed.

"Any approach would be to them first, and I have heard nothing yet, apart from a lot of rumours.

"There has been no concrete offer from Sunderland or any other club as yet, so we will have to wait and see."
