Lisa,
Being a former travel agent, of all of my island travels, Bermuda is one, if not, my most favorite island.
It is idyllic, with it's stacking of pastel houses, of all hues, and the traffic cop in his spotless white uniform blowing his whistle.
The best way to see the island, on your own, is by motorbike--but beware! Remember that you drive on the left side of the road and all of the two hour visiting cruise passengers seem to forget that, especially, on the numerous circles that you have to navigate. Just put on your helmet, go slow and find any number of your own private beaches, with crystal clear water, and pink air-conditioned sand--really!
Another great thing is the diversity of the ocean.
On one side of the island it is totally calm and perfect for snorkelling, and on the other side of the island, it roars and will beat you up with the waves.
Also, it is very expensive.
Another advantage of having your motorbike is to stop at a local grocery store, buy a little fresh baked bread and cheese and have a picnic on your newly found private beach.
Have a wonderful time, as I know you will.
