I just became a tiger cub den leader tonight. not sure what I am thinking but my twins just became tiger cubs ane they needed a leader. my dh thinks boy scout leaders should be men and not women. I asked him to co-lead, but he just doesn't have time.

I am looking for ideas on what to do with my new tiger cubs. meetings do not start until sept. so I have plenty of time to plan.

help pls.

Sounds like fun, good luck being the den leader. What is the age for tiger scouts? My son is 10 and I would like him to try scouting.

10 years old would be Webelos 2. That is 5th grade. Our Webelo 2's just crossed over into Boy Scouts at the Blue & Gold dinner in Feb. I have a boy scout now and 2 tiger cubs (soon to be Wolves).

How did your year as a Den Leader go? My son is finishing his Tiger cub year too.

A note for your husband - Cub Scout Leaders are frequently women, while Boy Scout Leaders are usually men.

Glad you guys are getting answers to your Cub questions- my boys went through Indian Guides, so my Cub experience is limited.

There are more women getting involved in the Boy Scout program and many more women are involved in the Venturing program, since half the participants are usually young women.

I think it's great women are becoming more involved with cub scouts. They have just as much to offer the boys as men do.
My 6y/o in 1st grade wants to join and I'm trying to talk my 8y/o in 3rd grade into it but he's very shy. Do you know what group they would be in?

The 1st grader would be a Tiger (a program that is for the kid and a parent to join as a team).

Your third grader would be a cub scout (2nd and 3rd) and his rank could be a Bear. 4th and 5th are also considered cub scouts but are called Webelos instead of cubs (it means WE'll BE LOyal Scouts). It prepares them to be a boy scout.

I spent many years (about 8 years) as a Cub Leader (here in Australia, we have Joeys for the 5 - 7's, Cub Scouts for the 7 - 11's, Scouts for 11 - 15) and most of the leaders were women.

I think that the main criteria for any successful leader is that they are enthusiastic, and have the ability, and desire, to interact with the cubs on their level.

My own interests in science fiction and fantasy held me in good stead - I could discuss the "in" cartoons of the time and i considered it part of my role to actually watch some of the Saturday morning cartoons.

Your programs should be easy to follow, and full of "doing" rather than listening (they listen enough at school!). My most successful program was based on Star Trek - the cubs were an Enterprise away team exploring a new planet. There I had mapping, codes, tracking, singalling all rolled into one evening. The boys loved it (I know this, because I still see some of them (20 years later!!!) and they tell me that they remember it as being a great night).

You'll love being involved and it's something that stays with you all your life. I still grin when I remember interviewing (professionally, I'm a recruitment consultant) a graduate engineer who was one of my cubs - and he insisted on calling me Bunyip (my scouting name)!
