Ants have been a long-standing interest of mine, and not surprisingly the bulk of my photographic efforts have focused on these insects. The name of this image gallery reflects this emphasis- the word 'myrmecos' derives from the ancient Greek word for ant

I visited your site and forwarded the URL to my all three sons and husband. We all are fascinated by social insects behavior and your pictures are great! Thank you!

Very cool photos. Did you take the images on the first page as well - with the insects on the white background? Are those photoshopped? They are really striking without any environment to camoflage the insects.

One suggestion: add a slide show option in addition to the useful search by nomencalture feature, so viewers can rotate through many photos quickly if just browsing.

It's no wonder you love ants so much, there are nearly 12,000 KNOWN species, which means there are probably many more that are yet to be discovered!

I did a study in college, where we tested dfor ants in a nature preserve, to see which are native and which are invasive. The studied showed, as predicted, an increase in the number of invasive ants (the actual ants, not the number of species) compared to natives.

What may have been even more interesting was how quickly the ants "attacked" the bits of hot dog we used as bait. I heard that a piece of food, anywhere in the world, will have ants on in within 10 minutes. I don't know if it's true, but everywhere I've ever done it has proved it to be the case!
