This question was sent to me by a single mom who wants to do the right thing but can't afford to over tip My answer was at least 10%. I have decided post to my answer in the forum to see if someone has a different suggestion.

I know that the buffet server's do not bring your meal, however, most do bring water and beverages to you, they remove used plates from your table, etc. Also, 10% seems perfect for buffet since 15 to 20% is suggested for a full service restaurant.

When tipping make sure that you are tipping on does not include tax when calculating the amount. Also if there are 5 or more in your party, make sure that the tip has not already been added in, some places do that even when it is a self service or buffet restaurant.

Hi, Vannie. My husband and I use a different method to calculate what we leave at a buffet restaurant, but it seems to come out to about the same amount. We usually leave a dollar per person in our group and that makes it so much easier.

Just like you said, though, if you are part of a large group, you need to carefully make sure that the gratuity has not already been added on before you leave a tip on the table! We had a large family reunion in Texas in January and had dinner in an Italian restaurant. We noticed that management had tacked on the tip to the total but different family members wanted to leave additional tip because the service was excellent! Management had only tacked on 15% which left room for us to leave extra for the excellent service.

Hi Trish,

Thanks for sharing. What a great idea Your way really is much easier, I will remember for the future (and pass it on to friends).

I also like to leave a bit extra when I get exceptional service.

That's a really good idea... I sometimes stress because I can't afford to leave a huge tip but i also want to make sure I am leaving adequate money. Thanks!-
