I have a flower almanac, and for December 12, it says "if you do not eat dinner this night, the fairies will take you away". Or something similar. Do you have any input? I read your article on flower essences...I am learning.

Can you tell us more about the flower almanac you have? Many almanacs contain interesting trivia and folklore, and I'm thinking that's probably folklore.

A great place to search is here:

Almanac and Book of Days

Search under that date.

Hi Firefly

I think Parthena is right it sounds like a piece of superstition. There are many folk tales of people being taken away by the faeries, often returning later to find that years have gone by and their friends grown old or died while they were in Faery.

Some folklore was used to scare people into doing the 'right thing' and some had more substance behind it. This one sounds like the former to me!

The world of faerie isn't all twinkles however & the faeries can cause trouble, so treat them with respect!

In some cultures the wee folk are given offerings of tiny meals left on the stove for them to keep them happy and bring blessings to the house.

The book is called The Herbal Almanac, written by Linda Ours Rago, pub. 1992. This is St. Finnian's Night, I do not know who that is, but I will check on it. The book says, for the day mentioned in the original question, if you go to bed without eating supper, the fairies will come and carry you away. I would ordinarily think this is fiction, but something happened in our life on this date, and when I read this, it really hit home. And up to the point I read this, we really thought what happened had religious significance. I still feel it does, but this blurb bothers me. The book is good, I bought it years before our lives were permanently altered by what happened.

Sounds very heavyweight Firefly. If your gut reaction is that the event was of religious consequence you are probably right. Have you tried asking for guidance on what occurred?

Oh, yes. The only thing that has allowed me to move forward is the religious aspect. So the faery thing bothered me, but I do feel it is just superstition. I do feel, however that this is beyond a priest's realm, the church can be narrow minded about certain things, and this kind of blew the doors wide open. I will tell you about it some time so you will understand where I am coming from with the faeries and the religion.

Sometimes the most profound awakenings come from the most upsetting of circumstances. It is very hard for us to see 'why?' from down here with our limited human perspective, sometimes life just seems so unfair. All we can do is trust that there really is a higher purpose and that we are being given experiences that will help us learn the lessons we came into incarnation to learn.

If ever the subject matter is too sensitive to post on the forum you can send a private message. I try to answer them all individually- although you may need to be patient!
