pretty much exactly what the subject says, I pierced my nose about 4 days ago, and apart from a little bit of blood at the point of piercing, it has been fine. The only cleaning I have been doing is with hot salt water so far. However, today, after a gym session (where I suppose I might have bumped it somehow, though I don't remember doing so), it began to bleed, not profusely, but definitely a steady stream.

I've read that nose piercings shouldn't be bleeding unless they've accidentally been pierced near a vein, which alarmed me somewhat. Though I suppose if that were true it should have been bleeding right from the start?

Basically, is this normal, and what should I be doing if it happens again? Staunch the flow, or wait til it has clotted and then remove the dried blood? I'd appreciate any input.

If the piercing got yanked or bumped hard enough, it would be relatively easy for it to bleed, given that it is only a few days old. the inside tissues are still totally torn.

Be careful when removing any clothing that has to be pulled off over your head. Try not to sleep on the piercing which can also irritate it.

Put some ice on your nose if it's bleeding, or really red and swollen as that helps the blood vessels to contract which reduces swelling. Then daub just a bit of antibiotic ointment on the piercing. This can protect against infection and slow bleeding.

please help...i got my nose pierced like 2 months ago and i figured i could get a new ring now. so i went and looked for a hoop..but decided to wait and got a new stud.

Now heres the thing, it is a flower and i covers the entire pircing and this bump i have. i know the bump came from me hitting it and it getting irritated. for a while i took care of it, and it went down a lot..then today i noticed it was back...so any way, i took out the new ring, which was the "hook"kind(twisted as it went in) i got that out ok,, and put in the flower.

the flower is short so it didnt go down into my nose like the other one, and it has a ball already attached to it.(no back, just an attached ball at the end) so it was ok, but then when i got home, i wondered if it was too short..
i could feel it in my nose underneath, but it was just so short. so for some reason i tried to put the hook back in.

I tried to put the hook back in because when i put the new stud in, i had to push it into my nose, almost like i was pushing through an unhealed piercing. but it didnt really hurt. But the hook was soooo hard to put in that i ended up making my piercing bleed. (not a whole lot, but enough) so i put the other back in. Then i panicked and decided to try it again, i failed and ended up making it bleed some more.

(sigh)Soooo, i put the other one back in and began gently rinsing it with water and some antibacterial soap. it stopped bleeding, but its sore. What did i do wrong? (besides the obvious) do i need to buy a smaller stud, will it ever heal? is it too short..

Ya see my problem, so many questions. and why did the bump come back? i have 9 piercings in all (the rest are my ears) and i did a pretty good job with those. But i am having such a tough time..PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP.

Thanks for Listening!

The bump sounds like a keloid, a type of scar tissue formation. These are most often due to friction.

The bleeding sounds like you tore the just-barely-healed tissues inside the nose piercing when you changed the jewelry. Cartilage takes a lot longer to heal than ears, especially thick chunks like the nose is made of. Noses really need a lot more care than people presume and I don't recommend that people change the jewelry for a good three months.

You need to take care of your nose now as if it was just pierced again, and try not to mess with it too much for the next three months.

Vegie, don't touch it anymore! And don't put the flower stud back in, ever--that's called a nose bone, and I've heard too many horror stories of noses healing, and the hole then shrinking too small to pull the ball back out and the nose bone having to be cut. Not pretty.

It took my nose almost a year to be fully healed after I pierced it (didn't help that I knocked it a lot--for example, it would stick out a bit and if I wasn't careful taking my glasses off they'd catch it and jerk it!). Go easy on it and wait to change the jewelry until it's fully-healed.

And keep caring for that bump! I had a problem with getting one on my nose for a while, which would as I kept up with the cleaning, get progressively smaller until it was gone. It returned a few times but eventually stopped coming.

A keloid is scar tissue gone nuts. It usually happens after a cut or puncture wound and are real common after surgery or ear piercings. I had not heard of one off the nose before, but then nose piercing in America hasn't been around as long as ear piercing. Keloids are always raised and are usually pink to light reddish in color, no matter what your skin color is. African -American's are th most prone to getting them, with Asians a close secone, but any race can. (My brother in law gets them, and he's caucasian). If you have ever seen someone with a "fleshy" lump below an ear that's pierced- that's a keloid. You can't just have them cut off, 'cause that just usually makes the scarring worse. Most treatments begin with cortisone injections and go from there, but you would need to see your Dr. or a dermatologist to be sure. Here's a website w/ some more info.

They've got some over-the-counter suggestions, too. But I would still suggest getting your Dr. to look at it to be sure. Because if this is a keloid, you may want to re-think getting a lot of piercings, because you run the chance of getting a keloid every time you do.

i have 5 piercings, all on my ears. one on my cartilage, 5 years old, that has a keloid, and the two on each of my lobes,i got them first pierced when i was very young then again 9 years ago, no keloids. i want to get my nose pierced and other ear piercings, but how likely is it that i would get keloids there? and is there something i can do to help prevent them? could keloids form if you aren't careful enough with the piercing or if it gets infected, or is it just some random thing?

I know more about the AFTER-effects of keloids than preventing, i'm afraid. I worked as a surgical tech (Kind of on the same level as an LPN, but more specialized, i couldn't do anything outside of surgery). We had a brief course on scars, keloids were part of that. Check out the website I posted above. They seem to have some really useful information on Keloids.

Although, it does sort of seem like the only time you got the keloid was when the piercing was around cartilage. it may be that as long as you stay in the fleshy non-cartilage areas you'll be OK, but I don't know for sure. Check out the website or ask your Dr. the next time you see him/her.
