After 7 years of being on birth control I decided that I no longer wanted to put artificial hormones into my body. But when I requested a tubal ligation no doctor would consider it so in order for me to go off the pill my wonderful man volunteered to get a vasectomy. He called the clinic and made an appointment. At his first appointment they went over the procedure with him such as risks and stats and all that and one month later he was snipped. Why was it so easy for him when no doctor would touch me? I hate how everyone assumes that all women want to have children.

I guess I'm lucky ... I've been on birth control for 17 years, and when I talked to my doctor about it, she immedately said "Okay!" I haven't done it yet due to work obligations, but I will before summer is over ... I'm 35.

Are you married, or younger or did they say why they wouldn't do it? NOT THAT IT SHOULD MATTER!! I've heard of some doctors giving patients grief over it, but they should still be obligated to do it if you want it!

Where am I going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

I am not married. I choose not to get married and my partner doesn't see marriage as a neccessity either so marriage is not on our "To do list". Him and are are both 24 and he had no problems getting his vasectomy. I was 23 when I asked the doctor to perform the tubal ligation and he said no. That was during the same visit that I was getting surgery for cancerous tissue on my cervix. The funny thing is later in the visit he told me the removal of the tissue is likely to weaken my cervical muscles and could cause miscarriage "when I get pregnant." I already told him I didn't want kids anyway. Stupid doctor!

I had a cousin who couldn't even get a tubal after her second baby. Stupid doctors indeed. I was fortunate that at age 22, my doctor agreed to perform the surgery. She talked it over with me first but was never insulting and never questioned my desire to remain child free.

I find that for these things, female doctors are "usually" a bit more reasonable.
