Soviet Protest Music

All Things Considered, December 9, 1999 Rob Rand describes a form of Soviet era musical expression called MAGNITIZDAT -- meaning "publication by tape recorder." Secret tunes -- passed person-to-person to defy authority -- have survived and have been collected. They're now freely available in former Soviet countries on compact discs. In the songs, singers protested against things such as the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and other Cold War events.
