On that subject (and y'all may find my choice crazy), but my favorite "piece" of art has always been the ceiling of the cistine chapel!
Not only are the vignettes gorgeous in and of themselves (I have a reprint of God's hand reaching down to Adam's over my fireplace), but just to think of the skill and pain the man had to go through to accomplish that feat! It is simply amazing.
