Anyone care to share?

I used to have one that terrified me, and I can still remember it vividly.

I was around 4 or 5 and at a relative's home. My mother and father, all dressed up in nice clothes and in a nice car (we had neither) had dropped me off and were driving away. I wanted to go with them. I was screaming and crying and they were smiling and waving, but telling me I couldn't come with them. I would wake up hysterical and exhausted.

My childhood situation was less than happy, shall we say. I grew up with abandonment issues that took years to resolve. I must have felt unwanted even then. Without going into detail, I can tell you that I'm sure I had good reason for feeling that way - it continued until I left home a week after graduation.

So this isnt a dream...but what about when you wake up and you literaelly are paralyzed, you feel like someone is staring at you and you cant move to look at them, so of course you panic a little bit, because you cant move and want to know what is behind you. For some reason I always sleep on my side facing the wall, and that is usually how I wake up when I have these occurrences. This has happened to me least 3 or 4 times. Ive eventually been able to move after telling myself to relax and breathe slowly and of course theres no one else in the room - just my rampant imagination.

Wow. Seems I've had really good timing lately. This is new article you'll be interested in, and I'd love to have a discussion in the forum about it - especially since your experience isn't "cookie-cutter," either:

The dream: On my grandfather's farm some of the men working there found a hand sticking out of the ground. It was on one of the grassy hills, not in the bottomland. The hand was red with yellow veins like a flayed hand and flames were coming out of it, yet it seemed to be alive. The men grabbed it (how could they do this?) and pulled it out of the ground; then they saw that it was like a plant, it had a thick long root which they pulled out. One of the men said 'Sometimes those things go down 20-30 feet into the ground!' I don't remember what happened after that, or the fate of the fiery mandrake root-hand. Afterward, no longer asleep or dreaming, I thought the hand was in my other grandfather's house where I was living then, but now it had turned black. I was afraid to sleep next to the wall, afraid that the hand would come out of the wall and pull me in; I made my mother sleep next to the wall. This was the most disturbing of the dreams of childhood. The theme of the fearful hand has appeared in some movies, most of them made long after I had this dream; it became a joke in the Addams Family series.

That article did jog my memory a bit...there was alot of pressure - like someone sitting on me, however I'm a stomach sleeper and I don't recall any white figure or woman.

Ah, but you said

Sounds like you felt someone was there although you couldn't see them - not everyone sees the hag - the pressure and paralysis are the main characteristic.

Still running back and forth to the hospital, I'll get back with comments on the other dreams asap. Thanks to everyone for sharing!

Hi briareus

Children tend to have more "fantastic" dreams, such as flaming hands.....For adults, hands represent skills and abilities. For children, a hand may be threatening, which it seemed to be in your dream. Hands grab and can hurt. Fire represents passion, to a child, fire is danger.

Was there something on the farm or in grandpa's house that scared you? Maybe you were in trouble with grandpa around the time you had the dream? Perhaps you did something on the grounds that you got in trouble for? Or maybe something out there scared you or threatened you (snakes, animals, farm equipment) and the hand growing out of the ground represents that fear. The workers were able to remove it and weren't afraid of it. Perhaps they symbolize protectors or heroes.

Thanks for commenting on my dream. I don't remember what was happening on the farm or around me at the time of the dream, only afterward. My father was away in the war in which many people were on fire in some of the air raids, but I knew nothing about that at the time. It connects to certain events in later life; for me it's a big dream, expressing things I don't fully understand, about my connection to both sides of the family. One of the meanings: it is the dream of my roots. I would like to go deeper into this, relating it to the system of existential psychoanalyis. I think that is a slow method, but probably a good one.

I remember being a teenager living with my grandparents. My gramma came in my rooom because I was having a nightmare, one I had many times. She had one too, (at 78 she still has it). When I told her about mine, she was shocked, because it happened. Not exactly as in my dream but so similar she couldn't believe it because I was not quite 2 years old. It went away when I found out the true story behind my dream.

I wish I knew why she had hers so I could help her in the same way.

briareus, that does make sense. I'd meant to mention the roots, I think they're very significant. I do think the flaming hand has something to do with your work or creativity.

Sknydpr: When we are emotionally close to someone, it's not unusual to share dreams. Maybe you and your grandma will get a chance to piece things together.
