it is interesting how differently the words develop in different Slavic languages. "kolebac" in Polish means to swing the cradle with the baby - but this word is used more in the dialect than in the official language ("kolysac" - would be the right word). But the root of the Russian and POlish word has to be the same.

Nobody in Poland would say "kolebac" for waves - this would be rather "falowac" a verb from "fale" (waves). So, it sounds for me kind of funny <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> - probably for you some POlish-modified words would also sound funny <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Jaga, I know you are disappointed, but Polish and Czech are the only Slavic languages I can not read at all because of the bizarre spelling rules! I can understand Belarussian and Ukrainian, so if I lisetn to Polish enough and get used to the accent, I can begin to understand Polish if I hear it! But written Polish will forever be a mystery to me!

Czech - I can not understand at all - written or spoken. In 2003 the "Kultura" network on Russian TV aired a 1970s-era Czech minidrama. I couldn't understand a word!

Ironically, the neighboring Slovakian language I can understand almost perfectly!!!

Jaga, this is great! The song mothers sing to their babies while swinging the cradle is 'kolybelnaia' in Russian and the very craddle is 'kolybel'

female cow is "krowa" (I guess it is "korowa" in Russian and the male is "byk".

Yes, krowa=korowa, korowa=korowa but bison=zubr hence, maybe "zubrit'" - but you never know as it comes to idioms <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
