I was doing research on Vitamin C and Orange Juice because the Florida citrus group is now blaming low carb diets for causing people to drink less orange juice. But actually the diets tell people to eat oranges instead of drinking the juice, and for good reason! Look here -
Raw Orange Stats (per 1 medium orange):
62 calories
15g carbs
.7g fiber
70mg Vitamin C
Orange Juice Stats (per 1 glass):
112 calories
26g carbs
0g fiber (depending on style)
20mg Vitamin C (in box style)
Wouldn't you think they would WANT people to eat the fruit because it's easier on the citrus growers (no processing required) and more healthy for the consumers too?
I wrote about it here -
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art16599.asp But not only did I find that Orange Juice starts out "less healthy" than raw oranges but the Orange Juice actually *degrades* over time too! Studies are showing that Orange Juice can lose a full 75% of its effective Vitamin C levels between when you take it home and when you finish off the container. For example, the milk carton variety starts at 20mg Vitamin C per glass (which is pretty tiny when you realize the vitamins have 500mg in them). After a few weeks, it is down to 7mg per class.
I definitely keep Vitamin C in the house and having read all of these studies all evening, I'm very glad I do! It's amazing the things we learn that we need. Even if someone DID eat an orange every day, they'd be getting less than 1/5th of the vitamin C they needed.
