Hi everyone... any advice would be greatly appreciated. A couple of months ago we had our 97 chevy cav. towed to a shop. We paid over $1000 in repairs b/c our timing chain broke and it and a few other parts had to be replaced. 3 weeks later, we get our ride back. We notice no real big issues. The oil light came on... we got an oil change. The brake light came on... we get them fixed too. Then a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the car would not pick up speed and the oil light would come back on. So my husb. takes it to a mechanic close to his job. The guy tells us that whoever did the chain work for us did not change the oil pan and all sorts of debris (metal from the broken chain, screws, plastic) clogged something or another... resulting in damage to our bearings, crankshaft, and such. which would run $1500 to $1700 to fix... He says the other shop is liable b/c they didn't do a thorough job. We talked to the other mechanic and gave him the new mechanic's name and number and he said he would get back with us.
I want to know what my rights are. Do I have to let the shop that messed up my car fix the problem if i no longer trust them? Should they pay for the repairs since it is their fault we don't have a vehicle? How should I handle this?
