I'm a good cook but I cook home style foods. Right now the only spicey foods I eat are things like chili and BBQ. This is because most of the recipes seem complicated or use ingredients I don't have. Are there any hot and spicey recipes that use basic spices?

Hi and welcome,

You're missing out on some wonderful meals. I love  chili and barbeque but there is much more to hot and spicy foods. If you eat Chinese take out food take a chance on one of the hotter dishes. They are usually designated by a little chile pepper. Order 1 pint and see what you think.

Also, most of the recipes for is just regular meats and veggies just "taken up a notch" as Emeril says. I will post a few spices which may not be in your kitchen cabinet but should be. My guess is that you already have some of them there and may not use them, especially if they were given to you as part of a kitchen present.

Be adverturous, ethnic foods are seldom expensive. I will get back to you.

SwellGal,

The recipes are not really complicated they may use more than a steak and potato meal does but generally all it takes is a little planning to make a great hot and spicy meal. Once you get the hang of it and the right spices it won't take any real planning. In the H&S column for this past week I show spicy meals that can be made with pasta and leftover turkey. If you haven't seen it take a look and left me know what you think.

My family loves hot and spicy food. One of the easiest ways I've found to heat up a dish is with red pepper flakes. It seems that I always have a few packages around from the pizza restaurant. Just open the package and sprinkle some in. Start light because these little guys can get HOT!
Yummy!

Jean, I keep those and use those packets too. I love hot pepper flakes in my chicken with peppers and onions in tomato sauce dish. The chili pepper rounds out the flavor

Hi! We like to spice things up with crushed pepper flakes too and also ground red pepper or cayenne.. We make a Southwest twist on the regular pinto beans and cornbread that are eaten here almost daily in this part of the country by many.. We make a ground beef/tomato/cayenne topping to put on the beans.. add the cornbread and it's really good. My mother started that. I don't know where she got it .. probably her mother My kids have taken to stealing my pepper flakes so I have to keep a few bottles around. Yes it does get spicy

ahhh yes, red pepper flakes are a necessity for sure! I get the extra hot Pakistani Red Pepper Flakes from Penzey's, I put shake them heavily on my peanut butter toast, on pancakes or french toast, of course on pizza and the regular stuff as well!
