Hi Diane:

My husband and I are putting together a website for his business and he's made some logo artwork for the banner. The artwork was created in Corel Draw and then converted to a jpeg bit map within Corel. When clipboarded to any other program it appears fine, but when exported as a jpeg file the resolution deteriorates when displayed in the browser. We've tried it in Corel 7 and 9.

Can you suggest anything? <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Hi Ann,

There is a difficult balance between image quality and file size for the web. When you converted your image to jpeg format did you use the jpeg optimizer feature? According to the reviews, Corel Draw is supposed to have a good one. You will want to use this process instead of the basic SAVE AS. When I save my images using an optimizer I start with 0 percent compression and see what the estimated download time will be. Then I nudge the percentage of compression up slightly until I get to a good balance of quality and download time.

Assuming that you have already tried the optimizer, you can try to slice the banner into smaller pieces and optimizing each of these individually. Sometimes that helps because you can use a lower percentage of compression on each piece. Try to use the same percentage in the optimizer process for each piece so that the pieces will appear as much alike as possible.

Hope this helps.

There's obviously allot I don't know about web graphics <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

We'll look for the optimizing feature and give it a try. I may need your expertise again if that's OK.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ann,

The optimizing feature is usually in the drop-down list under File. Just go to the Menu bar and click File. You will probably find the optimizer in the drop-down list.

Using the optimizer (Photoshop or paintshop) .... if you use a "photo" not just fonts and tipographics elements .... use JPG 60% quality, it's usualy the best choice between weight and quality..... if you use just tipographics ... use the GIF option.

I designed almost a whole website by my own !!! (signature)

Check to see that you've got the right width and height attributes in the HTML code, this can cause the graphic to display badly if it's not correct.
