Lois should be on her way here (to Alaska) and I woke to the sounds of rain in the early AM hours. That would be about the time her plane left the eastern US. (there is a four hour time difference) I know that she is concerned about it raining the whole time she is here. I hope to draw on my "witchy" powers to bring some blue sky for her at least a day or two.

DH and I will go fishing for Red Salmon today. The rain is a good thing for us. It will hopefully keep a few fishermen off of the river. It gets so crowded on the river when the salmon run, that they call it "combat fishing". One year I was watching (and not fishing) the action at a place where two rivers converge. This place is one of the hotest fishing spots. Men, women, and children line both sides of both rivers and on down stream of the Y, standing so close together that is it is elbow to elbow. As these two men were casting across the river from each other, they kept getting their lines tangled. One would have to reel in the lines, untangle them, and start all over again. After the third time of this happening, the man on the opposite side of the river from me, started slapping the pistol holster on his side. He just kept saying, "One more time buddy, one more time." I figured it was time to leave the river at that point. No sense getting shot because this man couldn't control his temper.

Tomorrow, DH goes back to work. He will be working the night shift, which is a good thing for me. I can usually get so much more done when he works until 9 PM. I hope to clear the weeds out of the greenhouse site and the garden. Then finish the chicken wire fencing on the garden fence that I started last summer. It will be nice to start work on the garden and greenhouse this week. With luck, I may get a few raised beds built in the garden and the final greenhouse plans drawn so that I can build the darn thing before freeze up. I would love to be able to just plant next spring and not worry about construction.

Well, I guess it is time to get the day started. I hope to have some wildlife experiences to share after spending a day on the river.

Where is everyone today?

Well, fishing was a good time. I caught the first fish, the biggest fish, and the most fish. LOL DH says he isn't taking me fishing with him anymore. (of course he is just kidding)

The day stayed overcast with a break in the clouds every once in a while. The rain stopped the whole time we were fishing, and only started again a half hour after we got home. The crowds at the river weren't too bad. We only had to wait about 15 minutes for an open spot to wet a line. I let DH fish first. He fished for about a half hour or so until he broke his line. Then I stepped in to take his spot (remember the elbow to elbow spacing). I fished for about a half hour when I got my first salmon. It was a small female, about 6 pounds. Now more than two casts after putting the first fish on the stringer and the second one was hooked. This one was larger, about 8 pounds. Again, three casts and wham! I hooked into a beautiful 14 pound red salmon. By this time DH is getting tired of netting my fish and not able to fish himself (a spot next to me opened between fish number one and two). I said I would take a break to let him fish, but couldn't contain myself. I tossed the line out one more time, wham, another 14 pounder. This time I did stop fishing and give my spot to new arriving anglers. The limit was 6 fish each, but I thought having caught 4 in such a short time, I didn't need anymore. Besides, it was DH's turn to catch one.

Eventually he did catch a nice 13 pounder. Then we chose to leave for the day. So, five nice red salmon filleted and in the freezer.

Much to our suprise, we didn't see any eagles today. They must be fishing someplace else.

Hope everyone had a great day.

LOL, Shelley your question is a good one. In most fish, it is difficult to determine male from female. In salmon it is a little easier. Especially when they are in fresh water.

Salmon start a transformation that boggles the mind. These beautiful silver fish start to change shape and color. The male (Red) salmon start to get a hooked jaw, even before changing color. The female don't change as quickly. The male are usually larger than the female, and of course, when you gut a fish, the female salmon are carrying roe.

The color change comes later, as they get closer to the spawning ground. These silver creatures turn a bright red with a vivid green head. At this point, you don't want to catch them. The meat is starting to rot and is not good to eat.

Yes Lois, the fish was one that I caught. I think it was the biggest one. (Well, half of it anyway.)

DH took a week long fly fishing class last week. He is now a "certified" fly fishermen. Guess we will have to go out fishing for "round two" of the "Who's the best fisherman?" contest. LOL
