Birds in Storms says that birds will instinctively fly above a storm, seeking calmer air. I remember reading an article in a magazine once about a group of birders who came across thousands of tired and hungry birds after a storm drove them off course. The birds were so exhausted that the well-meaning locals were walking up to them and picking them up, thereby causing them even more stress. The birders finally convinced the local law enforcement officers to blockade the area. Sadly, most of the birds ended up dying.
