I periodically get mealy bugs in my succulents. I brush them down with denatured alcohol, which does the trick, but they usually need a check-up and possible redosing every three to four months, esp in summer.

Any other suggestions? My climate here is Pacific coastal...

Hi,

They can show up again, but that is just the nature of the beast. Sometimes that may be because we can't see on the underside of the foliage growing in tight rosettes to remove them all.

Unless you want to use a systemic insecticides, removing them is the best option.

Best

One gallon of water with 2 T. vegetable oil and 2 T. liquid dishwashing soap (not dishwasher) kills 90% of the pests.

Environmentally friendly alternatives such as these will work:

Biological control - Introduce Hypoaspis and/or Cryptolaemus (Australian Ladybird) to the infected plants. Hypoaspis is a small mite that feeds on small insects apparently, especially those darned mealy bugs.

Manual removal - You can pick the bugs off manually* in plants that are not severely infested or use a strong jet of water (be careful not to damage plants as that will defeat the object).

Manual Removal** - Use a 50/50 mix of water and methylated spirits to wipe away the bugs, the spirits should kill any remaining pests.

Or failing that you can nuke the mothers with some chemicals (although this is sounds like fun, it is quite nasty and dangerous to the planet):

Tokuthion - 5ml/10l water
Chlorpirifos - 100ml/10l
Confidor - 10ml/10l
Malathion - 25ml/10l

* manual removal
** see above

Mealy bugs aren't an issue with my cacti (I have needle-free pear cactus growing in the front yard). But they're invaded each summer by these weird spider like bugs--I've yet to find out what they are. They munch holes like you would not believe and I can't get rid of them!

Here in TN, when I have a bug problem, ants, small type of bugs, I use cinamin sticks or moth balls. Cinnamin sticks the most because they smell better. Spiders, all types of buys hate the smell.. Try Cinnamin Sticks.... Or sprinkle cinnamin around....
