Hello!

Just wondering what books on spirituality or New Age topics that you've been reading. I've been reading an interesting book called A Pilgrim in Aquarius and still working on The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

Feel free to share any books you've been reading!

I really like Linda Goodman. Especially her "Sun Signs" and "Love Signs." Right now, I'm reading her "Relationship Signs" which is really a handbook for making you and your partners' charts, and figuring out all aspects of compatibility. I think that book has been published by her children (or her daughter at least) after Linda died.

I have never read any of Linda Goodman's books. (And didn't know she died. ) Of course, her name is world renowned.

Do you need to know astrology pretty thoroughly to do her exercises? Does she teach synastry charts? It sounds fascinating!

I just received The Courage to Achieve: Why America's Brightest Women Struggle to Fulfill Their Promise by Betty Walker and Marilyn Mehr. A psychologist friend of mine has loaned it to me. I'd say it's a must-read for all women who plan on doing anything with their lives, motherhood included.

Welcome, myhands.

I've not heard of that book before. It sounds intriguing. Would you care to share some of the ideas brought forth in the book?

Hi Janet!

I just found your board here by following one of your links from our board!

I have a book I recently finished reading that I really loved though I don't know that it would specifically qualify as *New Age*. But it IS spiritual in nature and for that reason, I will tell you a bit about it.

It is called "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom, the author of "Tuesdays With Morrie". (Here is a link to read a bit more about it. Click on all the side links on the left side of the site:

http://www.albomfivepeople.com/

The premise of this story is about who a man meets 5 people in the afterlife and how each one is (and WAS) significant in this man's life on earth.

I finished this book a few weeks ago and although it's a small book, small enough to technically be able to read in one sitting, I found myself reading it slowly, and thinking about it alot, throughout.

Without giving anything away, I can say that it is crafted and structured in such a way that it jumps back and forth, between the past and present, with each chapter. But it is not confusing or unpleasant at all. I did find myself flipping back and forth a bit, to check on things, thoughts, details. Each *person* that Eddie (the main character, based on Albom's real Uncle Eddie) meets, has a lesson to impart, in addition to his story. Each has a story of how he or she has intersected Eddie's life at some point. Some parts of this novel were hard for me to read, sad, heartbreaking. Some parts made me laugh, some parts made me smile, some made me cry, really cry. But, I have to say, this is NOT a depressing book. Honest. It is thought-provoking and I am still thinking about it, days and weeks after putting it down. It is original and surprising.

If I had to sum it up in one concise way, I'd say his main point is that no one deserves to feel that his (or her) life is worthless. Ever. Everyone's life touches and impacts on someone else's in countless ways, ways we may never even know. And that's it.

I loved this book.

Shelley, hi! So nice to see you over here! I'm glad you found me.

New Age is such a catch-all phrase. Really, anything spiritual or tied to humanity's evoloution can come under "New Age". (At least, it's the kind of "New Ager" that I am!)

I've not read Mitch's book, but have seen the title. It sounds right up my alley! Wow, I can't wait to read it. I'm glad you shared your experience with it.

I finished Alice Sebold's Lovely Bones not too long ago, and that book also flipped between past and present, heaven and Earth. A really, really good book. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

And now, I have another similar book to look forward to thanks to your recommendation!

Stop by anytime, Shelley.

Re: Linda Goodman "Relationship Signs"

No, you don't need to know anything, just very very basic knowledge. You don't even need to know where your planets are located or have any kind of a chart. She has tables at the end of the book that tell which planet is where based on time.

IMHO the best book by Linda Goodman is "Love Signs." It's just compatibility descriptions based on sign and gender.

Hi Janet. The Courage to Achieve was written by two women who graduated from a school in New York, The Hunter School, which was for gifted women. The authors, also psychologists, were drawn to the subject of female achievement, as the upper echlons of the workplace are overwhelmingly occupied by men. The authors wanted to discover why. So, they used their alma mater, The Hunter School for Women, to study patterns of achievement in women who, were of a select group. This group of women were accpted to the school on the basis of IQ. The required IQ for admission was a score which placed the testee in the top 2% of the general population. With such academic strength, one might speculate that these women would go on to have a higher level of achievement in the workplace than woman with normal IQs. Achievement levels between normal women and highly intelligent women were compared, and it was found that women in the higher group were no more achieved in the workplace. These were women who matched the boys grade for grade throughout the years, and at what point then, did their position change, and why. After extensive research, involving over a thousand women, a striking theme revealed itself in the Hunter group. That is, when these women were asked if they thought they were smart, they almost exclusively were unable to admit that they were intelligent and/or view their intelligence in a positive light. They said they felt they were normal, or that they were good at certain things, or they knew they were intelligent, but that they would hide it from others in order to avoid negative social consequences. Thus, this inability to recognize one's own intelligence, and frame it in a positive light, is considered the primary contributing factor to underachievement in women. If one does not have access to knowledge of her strength, she will not use it. Thus, this book is for all women of all backgrounds, and it taps into the underlying currents which have formed our lives without our awareness of them. I am still reading the book, and I can't wait to read more, because it is very solution-oriented as well. It's a truly great book.

Thanks, IQ!

Wow, the book sounds fascinating, my hands. This does not surprise me at all. I absolutely believe "If you think you can't, you won't". There is such power in how we label ourselves and our self-talk. For women, or anyone for that matter, to be empowered it's important to make sure the compass of power is within, and to dismantle tribal or societal beliefs that do not work, or are just plain limiting and false. (Such as the idea that smart women can't land a man because men only want dumb women who they can control. This idea was more from the last generation, but some still believe this...)

I hope I can get my hands on a copy of that book to review!

I'm currently reading The Science of the Craft: Modern Realities in the Ancient Art of Witchcraft by William H. Keith.

This book brings to light some extraordinary links between magick and science (particularly quantum physics). If you are a science-minded person at all, you should definately read this book. It as been a real eye-opener for me.

Hello Froggie & welcome This is an old thread, but a good one to revisit.

I'm reading about three different non fiction books at the moment- which annoys me as I'm finding that I'm flitting between them all & just dipping in & out- not like me at all. Time to sink my teeth into just one that I can read cover to cover. Any suggestions for good summer fiction with a spiritual bias people?

I am recommending Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz to everyone this summer. Not his usual horror tale, but one of quirky wierdness and tons of humour. I was reading it on a plane and was a little embarrassed to not be able to stop from laughing out loud frequently (then thought, why not? Not enough people laugh, right?) It has a strong spiritual message of how one chooses to live with uncertainty. Brief synopsis of the plot: an expectant father awaits news of the birth of his child while in the same hospital, his father is dying and lies in a coma. The old man suddenly wakes up and has 10 predictions regarding the new grandchild who is at that moment being born...including the dates of 5 terrible days in this child's life. Predictions, clowns (shiver), true love and gourmet dinners colour this story. It is not to be missed. After laughing your way through it, you will be passing it along to someone else!

Be kinder than you need to be. Everyone is dealing with something.

If you haven't read it yet, you should read The Burning Times by Robin Morgan. It's a fiction novel based on the historical story of the Inquistion and Alyce Kyteler in Ireland.

Ms. Morgan's writing style is great, and though the story is not completely true, it is told well and based on things that actually happened. I thoroughly enjoyed it, anyway, and it isn't super-heavy reading.

Why do clowns have that effect on so many people? You would think they would elicit feelings of joy, or something...

My husband has a good personal story as to why, so I understand his queaziness, but in general I don't get it!!

I don't know- I've been perturbed by them since childhood. Maybe it is the mask effect with the make-up- pretending to be happy when the face underneath is often anything but.

I find people dressed up in animal suits & things odd too. I crossed the road to avoid a giant bunny once. Better not do Disneyland!

I'm not finished with this novel yet, but it is the story of Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob in the Bible. I guess she was mentioned only in passing there, but Diamant extrapolates her story and the story of her 4 mothers.

I'm thoroughly enjoying it right now, and it has a lot of mentionings of the goddess in her various names and forms.

Anyone else reading anything good?

Hi, I just found this site & love it!
Right now I'm reading Transcending The Levels of Consciousness(The Stairway to Enlightenmnet) by David R. Hawkins, M.D.,PhD This is his fifth book - the first was Power vs Force.
He and his research team have calibrated levels of consciousness & throughout his works, he suggests lots of ways to move beyond thoses levels - it's all fascinating to me & so helpful.

Glad you like the site Judy- thanks for the feedback

I have read about Dr David Hawkins in a magazine I think- is he the guy that has been testing the level of integrity on the planet? It was a fascinating article & made a lot of sense. Basically it was saying that as people worked on raising their own integrity it would have a knock on effect on the rest of humanity- a hopeful message compared to the 'poor me I'm too small to do anything' stance.

I believe in this 'ripple effect' too. The film 'What the Bleep' mentions an experiment where a group of meditators significantly lowered the rate of violent crime in Washington DC over the period of thir meditations- as proven by police crime stats!

My daughter saw one little scene when I was watching the movie "It" and some 4 years later she is still terrified of clowns.

"It" will definately do it, but if a little kid never saw that movie until the teenage years it seems that they wouldn't be afraid... You would still have all of those years of good associations. I don't know.

It is excellent so far. I wish I had been able to read his first book for the "Solitary Practioner" first, but I just appreciate having this one to read. Te doesn't talk over you, or say that you have to do EVERYTHING a certain way.

I am DEFINITELY looking forward to reading his other books.

I'm reading To Stir a Magick Cauldron by Silver RavenWolf. I really appreciate that it goes in depth about casting circles and creating sacred space. I feel that many beginners books are lacking in that area...

I'm a big "Freebie", getting money for doing online suveys and points junkie, and earlier in this topic a few of you mentioned about reading books by Scott Cunniingham.

I received an email offer today from a site I belong to, sign up and get points kind of thing. One of the sites it wanted me to check out was OneSpirit.com, a book club. If any of you are interested in this kind of thing you can get SETS of his books, when you sign up to join it. I'm not much on book clubs, not because of price or service or anything, but just becasue I don't purchase many books. But I am considering joining this one. I figure joining it and getting his books this way might equal say if I were to pay shipping ordering them seperately from another site.

Just thought I'd let you all know.

I just got 'The Power of Now" about a month ago - I absolutely loved it. Another fabulous read - mind the title, it's actually quite spiritually profound, is 'The Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace Stevens. It was written in the early 1920's and is now a free Ebook you can find on the web. The principles are metaphysically amazing.

I'm currenly reading 'Holy Cow" by Sarah MacDonald, and re-reading "Incest" by Anais Nin.

Thanks Lisbeth- will have to look up the e book!

Moonshadows that club offer does look tempting- I used to belong to book clubs over here but got fed up with 'editor's choices' arriving when I'd forgotten to order. This one looks better- for a start the introductory offer gives you a really big choice of books. Check the small print!!

For those in the UK I can recommend Cygnus Books, based here in Wales. You get a free brochure every month, they don't send any 'editor's choices', you don't have to order if you don't want to & all the books are discounted. No fancy joining gifts though. www.cygnus-books.co.uk

Has anyone read The Field by Lynne McTaggart? This book does an excellent job of showing how quantum physics could support things like telepathy, tarot, astral travel, spells, etc... It is broken down so that non-techy people can grasp it to. I highly suggest this book along with Science of the Craft by William Keith (though it probably wouldn't hurt to have a bit of knowledge on the subject). I would suggest reading Science of the Craft first.

Both of these books are must haves for anyone who requires science behind their witchcraft or other New Age beliefs.

If you have read either of these books, what did you think??

Hi Froggie

Good suggestions, thanks! I have The Field & started reading it, but got distracted....it is quite a serious read & by bedtime I'm often too tired for that level of reading smile

I agree there do seem to be 'proper' scientific explanations given for many of the phenomena that can be associated with the movement of energy & the energetic connections between all things. I'll look out for the other book.

in reference to lovelove and froggie 'discrepancy' - no one is right because we won't know who is right til we die...and then who are you going to tell? Sides, I've never been a fan of a religion that says because I am a woman I am a lesser person and that I've been a sinner since birth - Bah Humbug to that.

I am reading "Live what you Love" by Bob and Melinda Blanchard...very good...
Also I am reading "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris. It's a tell it like it is novella in regards to the christian faith and morality.

I am reading "The Attractor Factor" by Joe Vitale. It's very good (and a fun and easy read too).

Botanical,
Nowhere does Christianity say you are lesser because you are a woman. Please explain.

Hallelujah to that, sister!! smile

I'm currently reading The Witch of Cologne by Tobsha Learner. It's a novel about the Inquisition arresting (and doing the other wonderfully delightful things associated with the Spanish Inquisition) a Jewess midwife for witchcraft and sorcery.

I'm only about 1/4 of the way through it so far, but it is good even though the story is moving a little slowly. A lot of good imagery (sometimes a little too much, considering the backdrop) and good background on the characters. I'm enjoying it so far, and like The Red Tent and The Burning Times it is fiction with a straw of truth is tossed in with it.

They were not behaving as Christians. Christian is as Christian does. That goes for Catholicism too.

lovelove - perhaps your brand of Christianity does not, in your belief, subscribe to the theory that a woman is a lesser person...however in Genesis, Eve was was made from Adam to serve him. Also, Lilith was spurned from Eden because she did not obey Adam. There is one example for you

Also, Catholicism is a brand of Christianity...and on another side note, why is this particular discussion in the New Age forum?

It's in the "What are you reading?" thread. I'm reading a novel about a woman who was prosecuted by the Inquisition for being a witch. That's when lovelove stepped in...

Botanical,
Eve was made as Adam's companion. They served each other after serving God first. And what scripture do you get a Lilith from?

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've finished this book, and it is excellent. The plot goes a little slowly at times, but it is worth sticking through it.

I'm reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I guess that qualifies as kind of New Age. It's a wonderful book!

JoanJ, my mom gave me the Power of Now and I've never picked it up. I keep hearing good things about it though, so guess I should give it a try!

Hi everyone. I am new to these boards. I love reading about new age topics, mainly about psychics. I have read The Lovely Bones, it was one of my favorite books. Was not quite sure I could get through it because of the unfortunate circumstance (I have little girls), but I am sure glad I overcame that and kept reading on! I am reading Calls to Mystic Alice by Alice Rose Morgan. Very good book plus I love the psychic tips after every chapter. I am getting more in tune to positive thinking and now am calling on the help of my guides. Have a great day!

That is funny, I just read where Lauren did a write up on the book I am reading! 'Calls to Mystic Alice.' I guess I should read through more than the first page of the boards. Great write up. I totally agree. This book jumped out at me at the library the other day. I believe I am going to buy it. More than one copy to hand out to my family and friends.

Welcome Tesawink. I'm glad you liked the write-up too. It's a nice bit of synchronicity that it was the same book! I tried the Lovely Bones after a friend recommended it, but I couldn't get into it for some reason. It's still on the shelves- maybe I'll give it another go smile
