LOL Scrapple is now a CLASSIC in our house, the word that is. We got a game called "Warped!" for our XBox and it has lots of little animated commercials in it. One of them has dancing pigs and sings:

Grind up a pig - put it in a can - Scrapple!
Grind up a pig - put it in a can - Scrapple!
Yes I am the Scrapple Man,
Think I'll have another can
Grind up a pig - put it in a can - Scrapple!

We thought this song was GREAT and quite funny and never dreamed that it was a real product. Then we found it on the web and were quite amazed that people actually ate this junk!! It's called Scrapple because it is literally ground up pig scrap, the things they didn't use for other real food products

Well..call it what you'd like but I like Scrapple. Some things...like Scrapple, some types of Hot Dogs and Sausages, I don' worry about what's in it during the moment I'm eating it.

Just my opinion...I don't consider it junk. My family ate it a lot when I grew up. That sounds kind of harsh to me.

Hey Lisa,

There is no accounting for tastes. I don't (won't) eat a shrimp cocktail or boiled shrimp - no way, no how. When I went on a cruise a few years back, people were standing in mile long lines to get jumbo boiled shrimp in the shell. I ate macaroni. Go figure.

re: Scrapple - This is what I found It's dictionary defined as "cornmeal mush made with the meat and broth of pork, seasoned with onions, spices and herbs and shaped into loaves for slicing and frying." The word, scrapple originates from "scrap" or "scrappy" meaning made up of odds and ends for that's exactly what it is - boiled, ground leftover pig scraps with cornmeal and spices thrown in. Scrapple lovers think of it as food for the gods  Anti-scrapplers consider it a culinary abomination

This is from http/www.globalgourmet.com/food/sleuth/0998/scrapple.html Many years ago I took my mom to a Pennsylvannia Dutch Fair in Penn. It was great Wonderful handmade quilts! I do remember that they also had Scrapple food booths

Maria, I have to be in the mood to eat hot dogs or sausages. I definately blame my brother for this. He used to take delight in telling how certain foods were prepared eek LOL

Vannie,

My point exactly. I don't eat those things all the time, however, many people still DO eat them even though they know how they are prepared.

Once in a while when I am home and alone I make myself a fried SPAM and scrambled egg on toast sandwich.
Ooh yum! That makes me want to buy a can myself!
I think people like SPAM so much because it's MEAT that doesn't go bad, and doesn't need to be cooked.

It doesn't??? I don't think I could eat it cold. It looks raw to me I "cook" it because that's the way we had it when I was younger. Thinly sliced and browned on both sides, sort of like bacon. I never knew it was already done. I have to ask my brothers if they know this I guess I never read the can.

Does not need to be cooked means it would be good for a real no electricity/gas emergency!!! Right?
Thanks for enlightening me

I was going by the Russian equivalent of SPAM, so I don't know 100%. But I'm pretty sure that if it's a preserved food there is no bacteria left, so it *should* be safe to eat without additional preparation.

Mmm...SPAM. So good, it has to be capitalized. Hee hee...actually it's a really popular food item in hawaiian and japanese cuisine: SPAM musubi. They even have them ready made at 7-11's in Hawaii. =) It's basically SPAM (sometimes with a light teriyaki glazed, over rice...made in a nice hand-sized portion.

You're right. It is very popular in Hawaii I had no idea that is was that popular though at 7-11's? that's so cool.
