Do any of you take your kids to do volunteer work? That's supposed to be a good way for them to learn about helping others and showing kindness and compassion. How many families actually take the time to do it, though?

Anybody? If so, what kinds of activities do you do?

If you'd like tips on teaching kids about compassion, check out this story on the Work & Family site at BellaOnline: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art9676.asp

Keep up the good work!

I do not have any kids yet. However, when I do have them, I plan to do volunteer work with them. My parents did a lot of volunteer work with my brother and sister and me. At Thanksgiving and other holidays we would serve Thanksgiving dinner at homeless shelters, and at other times we would serve soup in soup kitchens. When I was 12, and then again when I was 16, we went on a missions trip to Mexico, where we helped out at an orphanage and helped to build a house for Habitat for Humanity. We also did many other small volunteer projects through church and school. This taught me at a young age the importance of volunteering, and the point that there is always something for someone to do, no matter how small or young he or she is. I would definitely recommend volunteering with kids.

Wow, your parents did a great job demonstrating compassion by example. I'm especially impressed by your trip to Mexico... I'd love to be able to do something like that as a family some day. I think it's so important for kids to realize there are other families living in very different circumstances from them... and to learn to appreciate other cultures, as well.

I've always thought Habitat For Humanity was a good organization, too.

I'm sure you'll be a great mom some day!

Every year, we take the kids clothes and toys and donate them to charity, also, once a month we take a loaf of soap down to the local woman's shelter. one of these days, I do plan on taking my older children down to the local food bank, maybe a once a month thing.
I do agree that this is a great way to teach compassion, another point that it hits home is that "your life ain't so bad."My kids suffer from thinking that everything about our home and family suck, showing them that there are others worse off, shows them whating sucking REALLY is!
We're healthy, happy, have a home, or two in their case, and are together each and every day. With our joint custody deal, there are only 8 days a mnth where they don't see BOTH of their parents. A lot more than other children get/have.

Getting kids directly involved like that is great.

My kids' Sunday School encourages them to bring canned food every other week instead of offering and when I let them pick out a can it makes them really stop and think about other children.

My older daughter also learns a lot about compassion and helping others through her public elementary school's Kids Care Clubs and values education (you probably know about that movement that teaches kids about compassion, respect, responsibility, etc.)

Oh! I totally forgot about canned goods drives that are done through the schools.Mykids are always big into that and see that as a way of giving back! Which I think is very cool, cause who would think a small child would understand the concept of giving back?!?!
