Stephanie, I am glad that you discovered the art of bellydancing. It is great exercise and a lot of fun! Akasha, yes, I think it is a good idea to take some classes. Many years ago I took classes. There are specific moves in bellydancing and you can also be taught how to play the zills (finger cymbals). One of my friends who is Greek took the class with me along with another friend of mine.We bought the outfits, as well. My friends and I performed in a Greek restaurant. I then taught one of my other friends. Two of my friends and I did some performances for different celebrations. I should try it again; I could use the exercise. Have fun! Let me know how it goes for you! Hoopa! Sincerely, moose

Hi Akasha! Thanks for posting. I think taking classes is VERY important. While, "yes", the dance is about expression, there are very important fundamentals needed to do it correctly. I can't express enough how taking classes opens up the creative mind & its always fun to learn from different teachers. You can then incorporate what you learn from them into your own dance style! Sephanie, To answer your question about costumes. Some of my friends and I bought our costumes at the local mall. Years ago you could buy the costumes, but not anymore. Some of the others either made their costumes or had someone else make them for them. If I do bellydancing, it will be for the exercise only. My friends who I used to do it with moved out of state. Good luck with your routines with the sword. That sounds so Cool! Please let me know how it goes! Enjoy! Sincerely, moose

Hehehehe (about the missing "T") no problem.....I often do that myself when typing my own name :rolling:

I think I'm gonna take a stab at designing & making my own costume. I have a sewing machine.....but no clue on how to use it! lol

Stephanie O,
Do you know if they teach bellydancing in Utah? Do you know a good place to get a coin belt for bellydancing? Do you know the difference between a coin belt and a weighed coin belt? Which is better? My first belly dancing dvd was Belly Queen and I liked that but I wanted a change. I just bought the goddess workout. I really like it. I want to find a good deal on bellydancing outfit. Do you know a good place. I love bellydancing I feel like a exotic princess!!! It had really helped my self-esteem!! Im glad I found this site!!!

Hey everyone!!
Sorry I've been MIA...my mother suffered a stroke in the past several months so I've been distracted. Thank you all for the support! I hope to build up the forum/discussions here so please post your comments & questions!

Is anyone studying/taking classes right now & if so, how are they going for you?

Im sorry to hear about your mom. i hope she is doing better now......As for bellydancing. I guess im new to it. I have taken other forms of dance when I was younger, but never bellydance. I was always fascinated by it though. Maybe a year or two ago, i started doing the bellydance workouts and I love it. I cant really afford to take any classes right now, but as soon as I can afford to, Im planning on going for it.

While I think your friends are right and my instructor kind of teaches that way, there is a lot of benefit to going to class.

Our studio, of course, is special, lol - in that we have become a group of close friends and it has become a sacred sanctuary. We have hafla once a week after our Wednesday class almost every week.

We share our passion for dance and our instructor teaches us a lot that we wouldn't necessarily learn on our own. We learn from each other and most of all respect and appreciate the unique way that each person - and their body - has of interpreting the dance.

We also have a goal - to educate the community about the culture and spiritual benefits of belly dance as well as its health benefits. The studio is fairly new and we have one performance scheduled.

It is so very sad that most of the women my age (very late 40's) respond with the attitude that bellydance is sleazy shaking around when I approach them. We're in the Bible belt and these people have stereotyped anything that's not Southern Baptist but it's sadder that they don't honor their bodies.

Stephanie, I hope your mom is better.

Stephanie,
I hope things are going better for you and your mom. My great-grandmother (whom I grew up next door to) had several strokes, so i know how scary they are.

You don't have to worry about advertising for bellydancing, though. Parthena has been extolling its virtues all over the place! She's even got me thinking about trying it for my back problems, and I am Southern Baptist, LOL. (You should see my husband's eyebrows go up when I mention it, though.)

Seriously, I'm preparing to go through gastric Bypass surgery, and after I recover from that a little, I'm looking into different dance classes for exercise (Irish, hip-hop, and bellydance, and some others that i've always wanted to try - obviously NOT ballet!) I've always loved dance and find that way more fun than just plain aerobics or walking.

LOL, Michelle! Yep, I can't get enough of bellydance, it's truly changing my life and I want to share the joy!

I was hoping that you'd consider bellydance before you go through with surgery. I didn't want to mention this and scare you, but it scares me. One of Joe's nurses' husbands died in this type of surgery But I do know someone else who has done very well.

One of the girls in our class has lost 30 pounds, and the goddess size women are the most incredibly beautiful dancers!

I posted this link in my forum but I want to share it here as well. There is a new documentary in the works that puts my feelings on film:

Tribal Style

Just seeing the trailers made me cry! There's an interview with Rachel Brice and with each of the women in the film - including one who took lessons to surprise her hubby for their 20th anniversary and his reaction. The links are at the top of their page.

As my instructor says - Shimmy til your butt falls off!
