Is Paraskevidekatriaphobia, Fear of Friday the 13th a modern phenomenon ?

And what are your superstitions ?

13 has always been one of my favorite numbers. And I always loved watching people on fridays with that number, seeing them purposefully walk wide circles around ladders and the like.
Being Native American, 13 is a special number, being that there are 13 full moons in every calendar year - each one corresponding to a certain seasonal event. I believe that this same belief - the full moon being the best day to perform cleansing ceremonies and draw strength - amongst Celtic and Pagan circles.
For me, yesterday was a perfect day, and Im not the least bit shameful to admit that my abs are sore from laughing so much while i was out with my teenage nieces (you know it was a very good day if you hurt from laughing). As for the other popular 'supers'; I own a black cat (turning white as hes looking forward to a 21st birthday in January), and I think I've broken my fair share of those tiny makeup mirrors.
I will admit to having an assinine dislike for being near large uncovered windows when its pitch black outside and I hate swimming in the ocean. Fear of the unknown I suppose.

ps - I apologize for any gross typing errors, I did this sans glasses ;]

I like the number 13 too. The number of menstrual cucles in the year - I always thought superstitions about the number must have been made by men. I also like to walk under ladders - the triangular female shape

But I cross my fingers if I see a white horse - not such a common sight when you live in the city, but there are plenty of statues and even more advertising billboards featuring the image - and then I say three times quickly "First Luck ! White Horse !"

And yes, it's always a giggle to see people stepping out sooooo carefully on a Friday 13th

I've never really heard any lore about white horses, beyond the fact that they seemed to be cliche in 80's music videos.
There's another superstition about holding your breath when going by a cemetary, how on earth are you supposed to make it through gettysburg? As for me, I wave and say hello =]

my great grandmother used to wish on white horses - i just picked iy up along the way. It's common in the north of england (my g-gran must have got it from ger grandparents)

if you don't hold your breath while going through a cemetery a spirit can pop into you when you least notice !!!!!

you better be careful !

In my family the number 13 is linked to death. My father was born on Friday the 13th. He was the second family member to die. He died 20 years ago. My preemie died when she was 13 days old; that was 30 years ago. My oldest daughter was in a wreck on the 12th. She was gone when EMT's arrived but they put her on life support (for organ donation) and this was discontinued after midnight; she was declared dead on the 13th. And my cat became ill. He died on the 13th of the month. And if there is Heaven, then 13 is a wonderful number. And if there is not, 13 is a horrible number. And when Terry Schiavo's tubes were disconnected, and she lingered, I said "she will die on the 13th day". And she did. I am not superstitious about the number 13, just sad.

It kinda freaks me out too. However, those are the facts. Here is something we can all look forward to: On April 13, 2029, a friday, an asteroid is supposed to come pretty darn close to Earth. This gives us about 24 years to get our affairs in order. The asteroid is named asteroid 2004 MNR, and the info can be found on the NASA site. I forgot to write down the actual site before I raced to this forum to let you all know this interesting bit of news. I will post the NASA address on the astronomy forum tomorrow.

I have a couple of addendums to this post: one of my cats disappeared; I offered a very generous reward for almost one year; not a peep was heard from anyone knowing anything. A little over a year after she disappeared, I realized the date that she disappeared added up to 13: 1/16/05. So it continues. Well, Halloween morning my brother in law died; this was very unexpected. I could not at first realize his 13 connection, and today at lunch I realized his birthday is December 13. This "trend" has been going on since 1975. I think I will go farther back and look at the dates my grandparents died, to see if they had an obvious 13 connection, or if it started with my first child.
