ANIMAL CLASSIFICATION

Books:
Benny's Animals and How he Put Them in Order- Millicent Selsam
Eyewitness Books: Mammal, Fish, Bird, Amphibian, Insects, Reptile

Activities:
Separate animal flash cards into different groups: mammals, fish, birds, amphibian, reptile, insects

Make a book about the different kinds of animals. Use the eyewitness books to learn some facts about each group. Make a page or two for each animal type, write what characteristics mammals have on the mammal pages, insects have on the insect pages, etc. Then draw, cutout out pictures from magazines or use stickers to decorate your pages with that type of animal.

Hi!

I surfed in while looking for co-op lesson plans and saw your contest for the neat bag. I see that I missed it, who won? That was a cool idea.

Here's a lesson plan I used with my group's co-op. The kids were between 4 and 10, in 3 groups, so I got to kind of play it up or down a little bit...

How Latitude Affects Weather

You need:
a world map
a globe
a copy of On the Same Day in March: A Tour of the World's Weather by Marilyn Singer

We started by comparing a map to a globe, and noting the cardinal points on each. As an aside we looked at how many of the landforms were distorted on the map, especially Antarctica!

We located the equator on each and talked about why the equator is important. We discussed how that's where the sun's rays hit the planet the most head-on, and why that makes a difference weather-wise.

On the Same Day in March is a really interesting picture book that goes from the north pole to the south pole and looks at the weather at different stops along the way. It's a graphic representation of how it can be anywhere from a blizzard to a blisteringly hot market day, depending on your latitude.

While reading the book, we pointed to every city they mention on our globe. It was very obvious that, as you approached the equator it got warmer, and started cooling again as you went further south.

After that, we took turns pointing to areas on the globe and trying to guess when the weather would be like, based on their latitude. This was neat, because I could see that the kids really got it!
