Do you have a favorite poem memorized? Did you ever have to memorize one for school? Which one did you pick and why?

When I was a child, my mother would have us recite poetry while we did housework. She started a poem and we finished it and gave the author. My favorite poet at the time was Carl Sandburg, and once on vacation, we found a home he had lived in as a child. The home included a bench once owned by Abraham Lincoln. The guide said that the youngest person who could recite a Sandbug poem could sit on the bench. I was the only person who could! It was the highlight of my trip. So...you never know when a good poem will come in handy.

The two I have memorized are both by Robert Frost, who I enjoy greatly. It's the "whose woods these are, I think I know" and "two roads diverged in a yellow wood". I suppose I have a thing for woods

I love those too. I got into a big fight with the poetry specialist in my high school because I wouldn't say that Frost wrote Stopping by a Snowy Woods (is that the name?) because he was suicidal. My dad found an article about a girl who'd had the same fight and wrote to Frost, who wrote to her the correct interpretation. I showed it to the teacher, but he said Frost just didn't know he was suicidal. I soon figured out that the teacher thought all poems had secret meanings of suicide and I got a bad grade in the class!

I find it highly annoying that someone feels they have to analyze this stuff and find things that really aren't there. There is some value to analyzing a poem, but when you start stretching the boundaries to fit something you think should be there, that's just doesn't seem right. That teacher shouldn't have rejected the way you read the poem. A poem kind of "molds" itself to fit the mind of the reader--which is kind of a neat thing I think. That's why when a person loves poetry, they *really* love it because it has meaning for them.

Abu Ben Adem may his tribe increase
Awoke one nite from a deep dream of peace....

I learned this when I was about 7 yrs. old and now 45 years later it is still in my brain ...I don't remember who the author was though.

There were 5 of us in a little "click" in grammar school and we put this poem into music of our own ... perhaps that's why I remember it. We also used the same tune? to sing local billboard signs ... I know ... weird!

BTW ... I hike at the Carl Sandburg home on a regular basis .. it's about 3 miles from where I live and I couldn't tell you what any of his work is. Perhaps I should find out. One of my local friends here ... (she's in her 80s) remembers talking many times with Sandburg when she was a child.
