Did anyone have a family that had special holiday foods? My maternal grandmother did a series of cookies during the holidays, and those seemed to capture the flavor of my family during the holidays the best.
Tutu's graham cracker cookies, creme wafers and her ever present Caramints all make me think of holiday time and her company. Whether it was X-mas at her house in CA, or if she came East for a bit of true winter with my family in NJ, those three flavors were not to be missed!
molasses,filled cookies,italian choco chip,double chocloate,white & dark covered pretzels,red velvet cake,mash potatoes,etc we have lotsa desert here in pa
mmmm You're making me hungry lol for us it was pumpkin pie and pecan pie.. plus the traditional oranges with cloves and ribbon... I think they are actually called pomenades or something like that.. as an aromatic decoration. Of course I have to have dressing I'd like to start making more cookies. Anyone have any good recipes?
My grandma always makes a roast duck and the Oyster dressing. I really haven't incorporated those items into my own holiday cooking just yet, but I have started making her homemade candies. One candy that she always made at Christmas were these candies called Buckeyes. They are peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate to look just like the buckeye nut. I was born and raised in Ohio and it's kind of a state thing. LOL! But even now that I am living in Texas I make them at Christmas. Everyone just loves them and I continually get asked for extras. I don't know why we only make them at Christmas, but it would just feel weird to have them any other time. This year I plan to cook more cookies than last year and try a few new candy recipes too.
That sounds wonderful and I love blackeye peas is that anywhere near the same thing? I haven't heard of a blackeye nut before . and I live in Oklahoma. LOL
*grins* It's buckeye nut, not blackeye.... Two of our best friends are from Ohio, and we've heard all about the poisonous, inedible, pretty much useless (no offense, Ohioans.... this is how we pick on our friends!) buckeye. I bet the cookies are much more palatable than the real thing.
[color:"Red"] You tell me that I sin. You say I'm bound for hell. So once your judgment condemns you I SHALL SEE YOU THERE.
Boy, I did read that wrong lol.. minds on food lol blackeye peas are great.. I've never heard of buckeyes..
