It's me again, Chris--

I have Windows ME. A few months ago, we bought Office XP, the special edition for students and teachers. Is it OK to have both of these on one computer? I still have all the ME stuff. The XP for students and teachers has Excel, Word 2002, Powerpoint, and Outlook. Should I delete the ME stuff I'm not using now? It takes forever to defrag my C drive.

Hi Patricia
Office XP can reside happily together with WinME but it doesn't replace your WinME operating system ... if you have a word processor, spreadsheet program, and graphics program that you used prior to Office XP and you don't perceived a need for them ... they yes, you can remove them.

I don't know how large your hard drive or how much room you have available but certainly removing programs you do not need any more will help free up space. Of course the more packed your hard drive the longer it takes to defrag and the slower response time for everything. If you are running an antivirus program, you might want to disable it during defrag and make sure you internet connection is closed also. The antivirus will also considerably slow your defrag when it's running.

Thanks for posting ....let me know if you have any other questions. Also, I teach the MS Office programs so don't be afraid to ask questions about Office techniques etc on the Desktop forum.

Thanks Chris!
And yes, my name is Patricia.
I am so unknowledgeable when it comes to computers. I have a 40GB hard drive, and actually, I still have 3/4 of the pie left on the little pie chart thingy. It just annoys me to have stuff on here I don't use--mainly because I don't know how to use it all! All those icons cluttering up my desktop... I feel guilt because it seems so wasteful! And I'll be sure to check out that office stuff you're talking about.

I've heard that ME and Palms don't mix well. My son got a palm and put that hotsync thing on here and it screwed up my Norton and everything else! After doing SysRestore and spending about 3 hrs on the phone with Dell Tech support I finally got my Norton fixed. But you should have seen my Recycle Bin! I set the world record for having the most junk files in a recycle bin!

And P.S.--It really annoys me that I can talk history or poetry, but don't have enough brains to tell the difference between a bit and a byte! <img src="/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

Hi Patricia
I'm not "literate" on ME quirks because I skipped it. There wasn't anything that warrented the up grade ... in fact the company I teach for never even scheduled ME classes.

Each of us have our areas of knowledge and experience ... I am horrid in History and the liberable arts. People at work will tell me they are stupid about computers ... I tell them, no you are not ... you are just inexperienced. I do it day in a day out ... just like you do your job ... I could not go out there and do your job. So you have no reason to feel guilt about no knowing. You have other talents that you are capitalizing on. Part of being smart is knowing where to go to get help and information ... and you do that.

You might consider upgrading to Windows XP ... it is a much better operating system then ME and would eliminate the Palm problem.

I should be more fanitical about cleaning up the junk on this thing that I don't use but *sigh* I get lax <G>

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
