I just read an article in the Edmonton Journal about the huge breath freshener fad.

The long and the short of it is that the medical expert quoted (Dr. Harold Katz, a specialist in treating halitosis)maintains that they are all "window dressing" - everything from mints to gum, to the new strips.

Very few people are actually looking into what causes bad breath (ulcers, stomach cancer, h-Pylori, various prescription drugs, etc.)
The only people who should be using these breath fresheners (and not go to the doctor or dentist) are those who just ate a dinner including garlic and onions and are on a date! Bad teeth and gums are often a factor in halitosis as well as a thick coating on the tongue...for which there are actually scrapers out there!

There are many old remedies for bad breath including chewing mint leaves for minor complaints. To improve fiber in the diet (which in turn helps bad breath) alternative practitioners recommend oat and rice bran or psillium. Chlorophyll (alfalfa caps) and Vitamin C are also very important.

Do you know of any "tried and true" methods for getting rid of bad breath?
