Interesting list!

How are you doing with your blue tarp roof? I thought of you Floridians today because at midnight last night a tree - loaded with heavy wet snow - fell over on our house and ripped out the power lines. It was a Very very cold (bardzo zimno)day but thank goodness everyhting except he telephone has been repaired, just under 24 hours.

A terribly small inconvenience compared with the tsunami in Asia.

I tried your suggestion about "inserting" a symbol, but don�t see any of the Polish letters listed there.
Then I tried adding Polish to the language settings, but can�t find any letters with that either. Am missing something I guess, though it�s told me that it is on my hard drive. Guess I need to learn how to find it.

Thanks for the �sto lat� wishes� did know what it meant, along with happy birthday, but was just noting the actual meaning of each word.

I think that Polish, just like English, has changed over time, and the way it�s spoken here I don�t think has anything to do with it.
My grandparents emigrated here in 1888, and spoke no English, so we all spoke Polish with them at home. It was my first language! But after they died, we never spoke it again.

When I try putting my words into Polish, it�s not the word order that gets me, it�s remembering how to change the gender endings along with singular and plurals for the verbs with different tenses and no. of persons. But I guess just getting started is the biggee, and these should fall in place, right Frank?

You mentioned that you started studying Polish. Is this at a school and recently? Maybe we can start practicing some of it here as Frank suggested� and I think even Jaga mentioned it at one time.

My parents spoke Polish among their generation, but did not teach it to my generation (which now ranges in age from 55-82 years old). I started to learn Polish after my trip to Poland this past summer - I found cousins living there and they do not speak English.

I am using the Rosetta Stone software by myself, not in a school. Plus I have a friend in Poland (the translator, Zenon, whom I mention in my genealogy article) who writes his emails to me in both Polish and English so I can learn from that as well.

You are right about all those gender endings, etc. - they are hard! I may never get beyond basic phrases!

I am searching for another link that I ran across pertaining to the Polish characters ..In it they claimed that these characters are seldom used .. Most is in plain English text,everwhere but some places in Poland..
Come to think of it.. All of my contacs in Poland use plain text.???? I will try to find that site again.. IIn the meantime check this out.

Difficulties in Speaking Polish
Speaking any language has its challenges and certain obstacles. Polish language is one of the easiest languages in regards to reading written text and writing text from speech. The main reason for this ease is that in Polish the letters are associated with a single sound and are always pronounced the same way regardless of neighboring vowels and consonants. There are a couple very specific rules for a few exemptions, but once those simple rules are memorized, all other sounds are predictable and even new words can be pronounced correctly without any doubts or knowing the meaning of the word.

There are no exemptions for vowels. In Polish, there are nine vowels: a, ą, e, ę, i, o, u, �, y, which never change their sound. For instance, �a� sounds always like �u� in �but� regardless of anything else, �ąï¿½ sound always like �o� in �ho, ho ho!�, �e� sound always like �a� in �cat� and so on. Once the sound is associated with the vowel, it never changes for any worlds. Although most consonants operate similarly to vowels, some consonants joined together make a single new sound. There are a few rules for joined consonants to be memorized. The new sounds are created by joining only these few consonants: cz, dz, dź, dż, rz, sz. Pronunciation changes in the following way: �c� alone sound like �ts� in �Tse Tse Fly�, however, joining it with �z� in �cz� changes the sound to �ch� like in �cherry�, �d� alone sound like �d� in �dome� but after joining it with �żï¿½ in �dżï¿½ the sound become more like �j� in �job�, etc. Once these six rules are memorized, the new sounds created by joined consonants sound always the same for most Polish vocabulary. So, any foreigner can easily read Polish texts without even the need of understanding what is being read.

A real difficulty in speaking Polish is Poles� carelessness in pronunciation. After all the sound are learned and their pronunciation memorized, a foreign speaker may still have trouble sounding like a native speaker because native speakers tend to lose some sounds in the words� ending. It is so natural that when someone does pronounce the letters as they are written, it sounds awkward. In some languages, like English, pronunciation of the endings is very important because losing some sounds changes the words� meaning. For example, �bed� may change into �bet� or �Doug� into �duck� if the last consonant is spoken carelessly, so English speakers take much care in pronouncing all the letters. In Polish, on the other hand, the meaning cannot change easily even if the ending is treated hastily; as a result, people tend to simplify the ending sounds. For instance, �chleb� sounds more like �chlep�, �talerz� sounds pretty much like �talesz�, etc. Because of this carelessness in pronunciation of the endings, Polish speakers have often problems with the spelling of those mistreated words, while foreign speakers have trouble with learning what should be mispronounced in order to sound like native speakers.

English speaking individuals have much difficulty in understanding the concept that in Polish language, pronunciation of particular letters is always the same, unlike it is in English where pronunciation of particular vowels and consonants is closely related to the adjoining vowels and consonants. So, in English, there is much confusion how to pronounce �a�, which sounds differently in �crab,� �basin,� �eat,� �acid,� etc. In Polish, speaking and reading written texts is that much easier because the sounds are very predictable. Once the vowels and consonants� sounds are memorized with the few rules, there is no word that one cannot say or read, and there is very little confusion how the words should sound. Thus, Poles spent very little time on discussions whether �Iraq� should be pronounced with �i� as in �irony� or as in �interest.�

Spoken polish is different from offcial one, especially in younger generation. For example:
Starzy odwapnili kwadrat na 2 tygodnie means that parents are left for 2 weeks and we have an apartament for ourselves :-)

I think the missing piece is that you need a Polish font . . if you do a Google search you will come up with a few places that either sell the fonts or where you can download one for free. Once you download it, install it on your system . . .the one I downloaded is called BelwederPL ...from hmm,, Ogornik or something like that.
