Do you remember when you first encountered people with really weird surnames? Those people had surnames like Smith, Jones, White, Rodgers, Black, Allen -- etc., etc. These people always asked how you pronounced YOUR last name thus showing a lack of linguistic ability. What is funny was to ask THEM how they pronounced their last name and what it meant; this worked especcily well when those people wore little name tags.

Some people asked why my last name Zimmerman has one "n" instead of two "n's" at the end. Others asked why I don' t pronounce it Tsimmermann. I answered that my grandfather anglicized it in USA.

Bob,

I have a bigger problem with the first names in the USA. Some girls names sound like boys, sometimes the same first names are used for girls and boys. Some first names are just too strange - I just heard about the first name Kerry. I used to know a boy, his first name was John and his last name was StJohn. So his complete name was:

John StJohn

is it not a terrible name?

Jaga. I agree with you and many times it is the parents fault. The parents think that they give their children a cute first name but do not realize that it is the children who have to go through life explaining over a phone that they are either a female or male. Then there is the song "A Boy Named Sue." which may explain some of the thinking. I have, on occasion, seen some 1st names that try to rhyme or make a sentance with the surname.

Carl. How droll and boring, going through life with a common surname that leaves you with no group identity.

Bob, Carl,

yes, it is not good to have a name which is too common. There is also another problem since some of the stars also give so strange anmes to the children - which only sound good when a child is small, but... they do not realize that the children would eventually become adults.
