The winner of the 2004 Eurovision song contest, held in Turkey, is Ukraine, so they will hold the contest next year.
This is the second time that a former Soviet republic has held won and hosted Eurovision. Estonia hosted the contest in 2003.

Was ever Eurovision held in Israel? I remember that Israel once also won a song.

Hi Eric, I just finished a exausting and exciting watching the Eurovision Song Festival from Istanbul Turkey. Yes, Ukraine did win top place but all of eastern Europe and the Balkans gave a good account of themselves.. My wife said that the young lady that represented Albania has a very good voice and I understand that this was Albania's 1st time in the Eurovision fest. I particularly liked the presentation by Serbia and Montenegro; it was very haunting. I understand that the girl that represented Russia is only 15yrs. old. The young lady that represented Poland did a teriffic job. All told, those who were lucky enough to catch this event received a very nice treat. I think there are other music festivals in Europe including the Eistenfod in Wales and the Golden Rose of Montreux but perhaps I am mistaken. Anyway I am now very tired and I had a great time watching the event. <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

It was a stretch to begin with for a contestant from Israel, certainly not in Europe, to participate. But it would have been too much to ask for Israel, a Middle Eastern nation, to host a European song festival. In addition, the risk of terrorism in Israel is too high.
